In the past five years, the Dutch ports have emerged as the marshalling hub of the North Sea offshore wind industry, serving over a third of the market's needs. Meanwhile, the UK, being the location of the largest offshore wind capacity in the world after China: has needed all the help it could get. The 2000+ components installed off the country's shores have practically been marshalled from all across the continent. As the North Seas Energy Cooperation (#NSEC) foreshadows towards a more ambitious era of offshore wind installation in the region than previously thought, critical infrastructure like ports will need to be seriously scaled up. More than investments, experience from these ports like Port Esbjerg, North Sea Port, Port of Rotterdam, Port of Cromarty Firth and more will be of precious value. #offshorewind

PGE Baltica and Ørsted shared an update to the Baltica 2 Offshore Wind Farm project. A recent agreement has been signed for steerable drilling under the beach—a key step for routing 275 kV cable lines and constructing crucial "connection couplers". Led by Polish firms ROMGOS Gwiazdowscy and ZRB Janicki, this eco-friendly initiative uses trenchless Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology, minimising environmental impact. Steerable drilling will guide four undersea export cables through designated channels beneath the beach, each about 1.2 kilometres with a 90 cm diameter. In Lubiatowo, Choczewo, the onshore connection point will host four underground junction joints (TJB). PGE and Ørsted are progressing well, securing components, signing contracts, and selecting a general contractor. The final investment decision (FID) is the last step before construction. Baltica 2 aims for 1.5 GW by 2027, with Baltica 3 adding 1 GW by 2030, contributing to a 2.5 GW total for the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm. As of 2024, grouting remains a notable challenge in the offshore wind sector. While innovations and improvements have been introduced, the fundamental issues related to the durability and reliability of grouting materials persist.

🌊⚡ Want to understand "Tow-to-Port" operations for floating offshore wind? 🚢 As we reported a few weeks ago, we are currently tracking the second-ever tow-to-port campaign at Hywind Scotland (https://lnkd.in/d6xaNnAi). While we gather data from this campaign, let's revisit the only other tow-to port campaigns, which took place at Kincardine in 2022-2023. Key Learnings: ▪ The towing procedure accounted for 44-45% of the total duration of the main task because the floater had to be towed to Rotterdam, NL. A build-out of local ports is needed to avoid long tows. ▪ The second “tow-to-port” campaign saw a 36% decrease in time spent on the towing back and forth from the port, the repair in port, and the main on-site activities. ▪ The reduction in time spent occurred despite using a similar four-vessel marine spread. Improvements were noted across the operation for both the towing duration and the disconnection and re-connection of mooring lines and dynamic cables. Lost opportunity for UK supply chain? OK, where to start on this one! Hywind Scotland uses floating spar technology which requires a water depth over 90m. If the whole system needs to be brought to a port for maintenance, like this current situation, there is no port in the UK capable of dealing with this type of floater, nor will there be in the future. This was an early pilot project looking at scaling up from a single device and to see if a well known floating tech from oil and gas fitted into floating wind. Huge lessons learned with one being that this was not one for a future floating wind market in Scotland. Hywind Tampen in Norway uses similar tech. It would require a floating dock system in 80-90m water depth to cope with such build out and maintenance. It is not a technology being looked at for future floating wind in Scotland. We have one port site in Scotland that could accommodate a finger quay approach from their existing quayside out to this water depth I.e. Kishorn Port on the West Coast. The cost of such a finger quay or floating dock is not commercially viable to service just the five machines that make up Hywind Scotland. No other floating technology currently being considered for Scottish waters needs water depth anywhere near this kind of depth. Norway is almost unique in this regard with deep fjords close to ports. Other markets may deploy spar floating technologies in the future but they will also have to overcome come how to manufacture and build the complete system in 90-100m water depth. Part of the planned deployment of nearly 25GW of floating wind in Scottish waters is matching the technology to our port capability (this includes planned extensions).
