Check out these amazing insights from our event last week and an awesome video recap from our Managing Partner Joey Arora
President at The Outpost | Co-Founded AFWERX + AFVentures | Startup Investor | Federal Government Acquisitions Expert
Our Maritime Mavericks Networking Event last week was a success! A lot of great conversations, introductions, and massive inspiration – thanks to our impressive speakers and panel members: Arthur Herman, Author of “Freedom’s Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II” and Senior Fellow at Hudson Institute, Garry Shields with Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Dr. Marina Theodotou with the Defense Innovation Board, Aniza Brown 👩🏻💻🚀 with The Rosie Project Jon Lazar with OSD I&M. Here are some notable insights when asked about what each organization is doing to remove barriers to innovation and transition of technology to the warfighter. “Learn how to deliver systems and put it on our people. You as the employee are responsible for making the change happen. We are changing our mode of operation, we are in an urgent situation and we need our employees to step up and change behaviors.” – Gary Shields, NAVSEA Carderock “Change the way we train individuals, be more hands on, incentivize, connect them to mission, connect the spouses to the mission as well.” – Aniza Brown, The Rosie Project “Lowering barriers to entry, having a hands-on concierge service for the folks who are proposing the technology, so we get to a yes quickly and we get to a no quickly. The way we help drive change within the department is to find the transition partners and reward them by co-funding their things so that it helps drive that adoption.” – Jon Lazar, OSD I&M “My job is easy because we get to collect all the goodness that is happening around the department, put it in a study and present it to the Secretary of Defense with a recommendation for implementation and new policy. Thanks to all of you for all the great things that you do.” – Dr. Marina Theodotou, Defense Innovation Board Thank you again to this elite panel for taking the time to join our event and for your knowledge, wisdom and efforts in the industry. We look forward to more events in the future!

**Supporting Small Business Innovation in Defense** During a pivotal event at San Francisco Fleet Week, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro underscored the essential role small businesses play in fortifying the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. With $526 million in contracts awarded to local small businesses, it is clear that these firms are vital in delivering critical capabilities and innovative technologies necessary for national security. The Navy’s commitment to fostering a diverse industrial base highlights a growing trend in defense procurement that prioritizes small business partnerships to address pressing global challenges. For industry professionals, this illustrates the importance of collaboration between government entities and small enterprises to drive innovation and growth. How are you leveraging small business partnerships in your own work to enhance innovation? What strategies do you find most effective in navigating industry procurement processes?

Friendly reminder: most meetings are a waste of time. Naval Ravikant says, "Be Too Busy to 'Do Coffee'." Guard your time strongly. If something can be done via text, email, or phone call, Don't turn it into a meeting. Save everyone's time. Focus on what truly matters. And be productive. ♻ Repost and make you stand clear.

I recently met with officers who spent a year participating in the Secretary of Defense Executive Fellows program. This initiative equips our Joint Force with valuable insights from the private sector, enhancing our ability to tackle complex challenges. Bringing private sector experience to the military is crucial for fostering innovation and efficiency. The exchange of ideas and best practices between the military and private sector helps us leverage advanced technologies and formulate strategic approaches. This collaboration is not just beneficial for our Joint Force. By understanding military operations and needs, the private sector can better tailor their solutions and services, leading to more effective partnerships. Together, we can drive progress and ensure that both our military and private sector remain adaptable and forward-thinking in the face of evolving challenges.

The U.S. Navy SEALS follow the maxim Slow is Smooth and Smooth is Fast, a product of their seventy-plus years of crisis experience, which means that acting fast does not necessarily lead to an effective solution. Came across this philosophy somewhere and ended up connecting the dots on how deeply it resonates with Preet Ghelani's and my approach when working with clients. Instead of rushing through deliverables or taking shortcuts for quick wins, we prioritize a methodical, thoughtful process. A process that hinges heavily on the project's unique circumstances, the scale, the industry, its constraints, its current stage, the resources at hand, and the North Star. This involves going to the drawing board and finding answers to all the right. questions and then using the added experience to redesign the process of delivering value. It is crucial to be methodical, patient, and to focus on reducing the time it takes to deliver value, instead of confusing operational speed with strategic speed. By focusing on getting the foundations right—whether it’s refining a strategy or redesigning workflows—we ensure that the outcome not only meets immediate needs but also adds lasting value. Like the SEALS, we know that by being deliberate and precise, we can move faster in the long run, delivering impactful results that endure. 🎯
