The practice of sport is recognised as a human right in the Olympic Charter, to be enjoyed by all without discrimination of any kind, and the United Nations Human Rights Council has acknowledged the potential for sport to cultivate human rights, combat discrimination and contribute to sustainable development. The Paralympic Games play an important role in promoting human rights in sport via increasing the representation, diversity and inclusion of athletes with disabilities. In this article, Partner and National Pro Bono Team Leader, Chris Owen and Associate, Summer Walker, explore the history and development of the Paralympic Games, the human rights framework which underpins it, as well as the challenging role of the International Paralympic Committee in balancing the right to inclusivity and participation with the need to protect athletes with disabilities from system exploitation. The Paralympic Games are a celebration of human achievement and diversity. Yet, as we enter the final week, it’s disappointed to see barriers to accessibility and inclusion persist. One significant issue is the lack of widespread television coverage. While the International Paralympic Committee offers a free #YouTube channel, many countries have restricted access due to exclusive broadcasting rights. This is a missed opportunity to promote inclusivity and showcase the incredible talents of Paralympic athletes. How can we truly embrace accessibility and inclusion if we can’t even watch the competitions? Let’s advocate for more equitable broadcasting practices and ensure that everyone has the chance to witness these inspiring events." #Paralympics #Accessibility #Inclusion #Sports #Equity https://lnkd.in/dAHYj6RW

The Olympics: A Stage of Emotions and a Chance for Change and Unity The Olympics are often celebrated for showcasing sporting excellence, but their history is rich with moments of profound cultural, political, and socio-economic significance. From the first female athletes and the birth of the Paralympics to the powerful demonstrations for civil rights, the Games have served as a platform for revolutionary movements and controversies. One of the most iconic moments occurred during the 1968 Mexico City Games, when African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in a “Black Power” salute during their medal ceremony. This bold act of protest against racial injustice and inequality highlighted how the Olympic stage can amplify important social issues. When the 100 grams crushed an Indian dream, we saw how sports can bring profound disappointment. Yet, through every triumph and setback, the essence of the Olympics remains the same: a belief that humanity, despite its divisions, can unite through shared emotions and experiences. The torch that ignites the games, should also serve as beacons of change, brotherhood and compassion. They remind us that, beneath the layers of society, boundaries, and beliefs, we are fundamentally connected. I believe the Olympic stages represent a utopian microcosm of our ideal vision for the world—a place where we embrace the idea of one world, one family. —a world where we stand together as one family, celebrating our differences while championing our common humanity. ❤✨ #Olympics #Unity #Change #Humanity #Sportsmanship

I am eagerly anticipating the #Breaking competition at the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024. I think it will represent a major milestone for the Olympic movement and international Breaking community and will be an event to remember! For me, Breaking is a sport with fundamental roots in #sportsdiplomacy due to its unique and intriguing history. It emerged in the Bronx district of New York City 🇺🇸 in the 1970s as a physical pursuit, with the core purpose of reducing the risk of gang fights through competitive dancing. This unique aspect of Breaking makes it a powerful tool for promoting social cohesion and a great example of #sport's power to bring people together for positive reasons. Breaking also represents a fantastic example of the increasing fusion of sports diplomacy with wider cultural relations activities, given that it is inherently linked to music and fashion and features top-class DJs in addition to the Breaking competitors (B-Boys and B-Girls). Breaking's influence extends beyond the realm of sports. It has strong ties with creative industries and e-sports, with Breaking video games featuring on machines such as the Commodore 64 as far back as the mid-1980s. This influence continues into the modern era, with titles such as Breakdance Champion Red Bull BC One, an iOS and Android rhythm game that focuses on the actual breakdancing annual competition known as Red Bull BC One. So, before you judge the merits of Breaking's inclusion in the Summer Olympics program, I encourage you to consider these points and explore the article below. It is not just about the Olympics trying to appeal to younger generations. Breaking is a sport and pastime with a rich cultural heritage and history that deserves respect and recognition. #BreakingDiplomacy #Breaking #CulturalDiplomacy #CulturalRelations #Music #Fashion #Arts #DJs #Sportsdiplomacy #Paris #NYC #HipHop Stuart Murray Eluned Haf Sarah Boswell Helen Salmon, FRSA Neftalie Williams, PhD Lindsay Sarah Krasnoff, PhD Professor Dikaia Chatziefstathiou Ashleigh Huffman, Ph.D. Verity Postlethwaite

Inclusion & representation is so important 👏
“We will celebrate what makes us different, show there is strength in difference, beauty in difference and that difference serves as a powerful force for good.” That's what the International Paralympic Committee said. At Channel 4 we say ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT. ParalympicsGB have written an open letter to Government insisting that disabled children have access to sport. There are 16 million disabled people in the UK and 1.5 million disabled kids in schools. All of them should have access to sport and to play. In the way they want, for them. Only 1 in 5 do. I am delighted to see us put this ad out today after we welcomed home the athletes last night in Birmingham with their wonderful 124 medals. 1,433 days until the Paralympics in LA. Now is the time for change. Let's not wait.
