I am eagerly anticipating the #Breaking competition at the Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024. I think it will represent a major milestone for the Olympic movement and international Breaking community and will be an event to remember! For me, Breaking is a sport with fundamental roots in #sportsdiplomacy due to its unique and intriguing history. It emerged in the Bronx district of New York City 🇺🇸 in the 1970s as a physical pursuit, with the core purpose of reducing the risk of gang fights through competitive dancing. This unique aspect of Breaking makes it a powerful tool for promoting social cohesion and a great example of #sport's power to bring people together for positive reasons. Breaking also represents a fantastic example of the increasing fusion of sports diplomacy with wider cultural relations activities, given that it is inherently linked to music and fashion and features top-class DJs in addition to the Breaking competitors (B-Boys and B-Girls). Breaking's influence extends beyond the realm of sports. It has strong ties with creative industries and e-sports, with Breaking video games featuring on machines such as the Commodore 64 as far back as the mid-1980s. This influence continues into the modern era, with titles such as Breakdance Champion Red Bull BC One, an iOS and Android rhythm game that focuses on the actual breakdancing annual competition known as Red Bull BC One. So, before you judge the merits of Breaking's inclusion in the Summer Olympics program, I encourage you to consider these points and explore the article below. It is not just about the Olympics trying to appeal to younger generations. Breaking is a sport and pastime with a rich cultural heritage and history that deserves respect and recognition. #BreakingDiplomacy #Breaking #CulturalDiplomacy #CulturalRelations #Music #Fashion #Arts #DJs #Sportsdiplomacy #Paris #NYC #HipHop Stuart Murray Eluned Haf Sarah Boswell Helen Salmon, FRSA Neftalie Williams, PhD Lindsay Sarah Krasnoff, PhD Professor Dikaia Chatziefstathiou Ashleigh Huffman, Ph.D. Verity Postlethwaite

Special Olympics is not the ParaOlympics. I've been hearing a lot of 'You must be busy!' and 'Why aren't you in Paris?' (my thoughts exactly), though as the 2024 ParaOlympics wind down, I thought I'd make some distinctions between these games and the Special Olympics. Firstly, it's a common misconception that the two are the same. So common in fact, that it's the most popular blog post on the SO Australian site. Here are the facts: Special Olympics and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) are two separate organisations recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Both are international non-profit organisations focusing on sport for athletes with disabilities. Special Olympics and the Paralympics differ in three main areas: 1) the disability categories of the athletes they serve, 2) the criteria and philosophy under which athletes participate, and 3) the structure of the organisations. The Special Olympics global mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and Autism, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympics offers many non-sports opportunities for people with an intellectual disability like leadership, lifestyle and healthy living programs. These programs help athletes develop the confidence and skills to be active and respected members of the community. Because Special Olympics Australia (and globally) struggle with building this awareness, we need your help in breaking down inclusivity barriers. If your organisation or company would like to partner with us and advocate for persons with ID and Autism, let's chat. In the leadup to our National Games and 50 year anniversary, it's an exciting time to be a part of SOA. https://lnkd.in/gGHi-8F3

This first post Paris Olympics week is still carrying the buzz of excitement and inspiration! What was it about this Olympics that had many of us at hello?! Paris’ historic beauty is undeniable. In collaboration with the greatest sporting event on this planet, it was the first Olympics with full gender parity and delivered across 32 sports many magnificent moments, heartbreaking defeats, moving stories of the athlete’s pilgrimage to get there, fun entertainment (Snoop Dogg did not disappoint!), excellent “play by play” coverage and unity. For all of the upheaval in various parts of the world, the ability of the global sports communities to come together in respect and support, even in the throes of intense competition, was a master class in how to do it. -Lift one another up and celebrate the achievements -Learn from the experiences -Recognize the generations of Olympic athletes who came before and paved the way to be better, along with the competitors who pushed the level of performances to the highest and best in the moment -Appreciate all of it and the village of people who were an integral part of the journey While there were issues; some that could be quickly addressed and resolved, some that required an alternate plan and others that are still smarting from a questionable decision, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games captured our heart's and broke many records. #ParisOlympics #WaytogoUSA #lovewhatyoudo #teamwork #healthandwellbeing #LA2028
