If you are attending the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) Conference in Houston, check out my presentation if you are curious about radical and alternative ways to healing colonial mentality/internalized oppression in the diaspora. Session Description: The purpose of this panel is to provide space for critical discourse on Filipina/x/o identity and empowerment in the United States when we choose to be in solidarity with Indigenous communities. This panel will focus on the colonial History of Hawaiʻi, the United States involvement in the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, the context of Hawaiʻi within United States imperialist expansion experiences of Filipina/x/os in Hawaiʻi and implications to contemporary social and ethnic challenges in Hawaiʻi. This panel will provide open discourse on Filipina/x/os in Hawaiʻi who developed a critical consciousness about the historical and contemporary injustices against the Indigenous Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) in United States occupied Hawaiʻi and subsequently, how we have navigated our ethnic and Filipina/x/o identities that are often in conflict with the indigenous people of Hawaiʻi. We will hear the stories of Filipina/x/os in Hawaiʻi in different contexts of solidarity with the aims of envisioning empowerment as Filipina/x/os that resists the legacies of United States colonization and illegal occupation. This panel will also discuss opportunities for Filipina/x/o empowerment that aligns to the efforts of decolonization and empowerment of all oppressed peoples. The oppression of Palestinians by systemic policies and violence by Israel will be discussed as a way for justice and a pathway for Filipina/x/o empowerment. #FANHSConference2024 #EncompassingOurJourneys
