According to literature dealing with messages involving health the main factors affecting how people perceive risks are 1. Having trust in the sources A “post truth” era, and one in which discrimination between fact and fiction, is very difficult for many. Conflicting information in quantity and too little of the education or specialist knowledge required in order for to assess it adds to the problem. The experience I have with social media indicates that many of its denizens prefer to ask some random person on facebook, and not check facts. Facts also tend to be what someone feels rather than what is. What one feels may make for anxiety what one chooses to believe tends to be biased towards relieving that by reinforcing bias. That is no judgement on people at all, rather it is a constatation of the times and how these always reflect the great variation in human ideas and behaviour throughout History. 2. Familiarity with an issue . Many issues seem far-removed from most people’s every day experience. They hear about what happens to others, through the various newsmedia. According to the catastrophe value they perceive, it might affect them and lead them to believe something may be more likely than it actually is. They might worry at first then forget or there may be a knee jerk reaction of overcaution. They might believe that a ban on x y or z is the reasonable answer to removing risk but this is actually fallacious as is the idea that x y or z may even possible to abolish. It leads to say politicians being seen to take action simply to allay public anxiety even though those actions might be without any real effect. Perception is all. It is the fodder of propaganda If an action or exposure is involuntary, Anything with attached consequences tends to be viewed as more risky to affected parties compared with actions that are voluntary. To realise serious consequences can be one’s own fault results in a state of anxious vigilance, insipient guilt or even shame people prefer not to feel. This is typically human, and these are feelings which although one might not feel them in any instant they can be imagined as an outcome. They cause dread even to imagine. We tend quite easily to dismiss such uneasiness from our minds; deny it shirk ideas of responsibility. So much so, that such cognitive dissonance can lead to some taking reckless actions with their own safety & that of others. So whether we know what we do could be harmful we continue to do it. If we can, anything we can blame on others we do. We aren’t all the same, we act differently as individuals compared to how we behave in groups we get comfort differently and our behaviour is often not rational. But that is our “nature” both rational and irrational, which emerges from our neurobiology. The messages that most effectively capture disciples are repeated from an early age, (ask any religious organisation). Make food safety a “religion”; cleanliness, some say, is next to godliness.

Picked up lots of great local coverage this week announcing the big win for the Sazerac Bar (s/o Catherine Koppel, Katie Grace Walshe & The Ehrhardt Group as usual). It got me to thinking about a few things: 1. A national win for your bar/hotel/restaurant is also a win for your city. 2. Good PR can maximize/extend the reach of any campaign if there's a relevant story to tell and an audience who will listen. 3. Even if a campaign feels specific to one particular marketing channel, always consider how it can expand within that channel or translate to another channel.

What is your post-conference recipe? Here's mine: In a large mixing bowl, combine equal parts of: - Wow-that-was-amazing - It-was-so-great-to-see-everyone - Keynote-speakers-are-life-affirming - I-am-so-so-tired - Gotta-catch-up-on-emails - I-hope-I'm-not-getting-sick Reflect in a 98.6 degree oven for at least 7 days. Serve warm. The point: Without reflection there is no learning. We just had an amazing CHART - Council of Hotel and Restaurant Trainers CHART 105 Conference in #Charlotte. But the learning (and the applying!) happens now. Shoutout to my friend and all around incredible human Donna Herbel for making my conference memorable. Observing her content always teaches me new things, but observing her as a person teaches me even more.
