Each of these components has its own individual carbon output that contribute to the device’s overall carbon footprint, alongside the device’s actual electricity consumption during its lifecycle, and its end-of-life treatment. But did you know that majority of an electronic device’s carbon footprint is generated during the chip’s manufacturing process? The large volumes of electricity used in this process rarely come from renewable energy. Infineon Technology, a global semiconductor manufacturer, is looking to change that with its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Successfully innovating optoelectronic semiconductor devices depends a lot on moving charges and excitons—electron-hole pairs—in specified directions for the purpose of creating fuels or electricity. Deriving inspiration from the natural process of photosynthesis, NREL researchers Alexis Myers and Melissa Gish developed a mixed-dimensionality (2D/1D/2D) trilayer of semiconductors to enable exciton dissociation. This exciton dissociation step, a splitting and spatial separation of excited electron–hole pairs, is a microscopic process that is fundamental to the performance of #photovoltaic systems.
