Week 1 at Skre: Learning, Growing, and Crushing It! 🚀 Can't believe my first week at Skre Gear is already over! 🤩 This place is amazing, and I'm so stoked to be part of the team. Everyone here is incredibly welcoming and fun to be around! ☀️ This week has been a whirlwind of learning and adapting to the fast-paced e-commerce world. I've spent most of my time in the warehouse, fulfilling orders, and getting a feel for the operations. It's been challenging but incredibly rewarding! 📦 Here are some key takeaways: Customer First: The importance of prioritizing customers can't be overstated. With orders pouring in constantly, it's all about speed and efficiency. Meet this week's Employee Spotlight, Joe Arnstein (He / His), an individual whose interests span from business development strategy to bird-watching, and everything in between! 🌟 Discover more about their adventurous spirit and fascinating hobbies below. ⤵ What do you do at Playfly Sports? I work on the Business Development team, helping to lead the strategy and quarterback outreach across all of our divisions. I also moonlight operationally to build and manage reporting so everyone has line-of-sight into the BD efforts. How do you like to spend your time outside of work? My family and I love to be outdoors as much as possible, so we hike, bike, kayak, paddleboard, hammock, bird-watch, etc. I am an illustrator (@paintbydumbers on Facebook / Instagram) and find joy in creating and sharing silly artwork. My family and I bought a hardware store built in the 1920s and are rehabilitating it to be my wife’s carpentry studio. We like board games, music (mostly hip hop), quality time, playing with our cats, etc. I am a terrible reader but an avid audiobook listener, so I am constantly listening to new things – almost exclusively nonfiction. Favorite movie and/or TV show? According to my list (see below) my favorite TV show of all time is Downton Abbey. Rounding out the top five would be Schitt’s Creek, Peaky Blinders, Great British Baking Show, Sherlock. Favorite movie is harder for me to choose - Field of Dreams, P.S. I Love You, Serendipity, About Time, the Bourne movies, most of the Star Wars. What destination do you hope to visit one day? I’m keen to visit all the National Parks. And go back to Ireland / England. Might have to do a site visit for Playfly Europe… If you could learn a new skill/hobby, what would it be? Empathy. Carpentry. Photoshop. It would be really cool to see something on Instagram and then be able to do it in real life. Fun or interesting fact about you? I can fit seven baby carrots in my nostrils. I keep lists / power rankings of many, many topics (favorite gins, which Game of Thrones characters I would be friends with, the best letters of the alphabet, romantic comedies, etc.). In small or mid-sized organizations, as a CEO or leader, you have the capacity to personally know and track each employee. This close oversight enables you to offer more freedom to your employees, including the opportunity to take on external projects or jobs, provided these do not interfere with their primary responsibilities. You appreciate this approach as it encourages employees to think creatively and gain diverse experiences. However, in large organizations with over a thousand employees, this personal oversight becomes impractical. As a CEO, it's challenging to track each individual's activities. Additionally, delegating this responsibility to managers or HR may not effectively replicate your perspective or approach. These larger structures often necessitate more standardized policies and practices, which might limit the flexibility you value in smaller settings. Thus, while the concept of allowing employees to pursue external opportunities can be beneficial in smaller organizations, implementing the same in larger corporations presents logistical and management challenges. Building Paradise: Experimentation in Soccer Operations. I'm always questioning why things are done a certain way, especially in ⚽... 👇 Sarasota Paradise's first season was a success: Best New Team of the League, 540 average attendance, and over 1,000 at our final game. Keys: 🥇 Consistent game scheduling (only played Saturday's) 🥈 Favorable weather (No rain or ⚡) This season, we experimented with: 🚫 Different game days... 👩🎓 Reduced staffing, relying heavily on interns 🌧 Rain, rain and ⚡ (Someone helped us with this one...) Key learnings: 1️⃣ Weather impacts ticket sales, a lot. Even if it doesn't rain, the threat of rain keeps people away. We need cover! 2️⃣ We will never, ever play a Sunday night game again, and stay away from special days. (Father's Day was our lowest ticketed game - also abandoned due to lightning storms at the end, hint taken...) 3️⃣ You can run a USL League Two season without full-time staff. But if you have higher ambitions as we do, you need a couple of full-time people that can help guide and tutor the amazing interns. 🤩 For 19 years, Pendleton Events was a team of 1. Me. 🤩 💫 Over the past year and a bit, the team has grown to 3. 💫 Still me, but now adding Hannah Goodger and Amanda Gillborn to the mix. We’re a small but perfectly formed team – we work hard, we play hard and always find something to make us laugh 😆. Even on days when it feels like there’s nothing to laugh about. As we prepare to 🎉 celebrate 20 years of Pendleton Events 🎉 next month, I find myself on a sharp learning curve once again. 20 years ago, it was that of a new business owner. Now it’s more the roller coaster 🎢 of learning to be a business owner with a team. The ‘ups’ ⤴ of all the excitement of having a team, sharing the load, and watching the business grow. The ‘downs’ ⤵ of learning to let others do, learning to relinquish some of the control and learning to trust. I know these aren’t actually ‘downs’ but I definitely feel I’m falling into the classic founder’s dilemma – needing to grow but wanting to hold on even tighter than before. Afterall, ✨ we’re talking about a business I built from scratch and have run alone for 19 years. ✨ We’re talking about my business reputation which for so long was inextricably linked with my professional reputation. ✨ Now there’s a team. ✨ Now there are others out there representing the business, doing the business, growing the business. ✨ Now I must trust someone other than myself – possibly not my strongest point.
