Hidden PFAS: What you need to know about Beautycounter’s support for a federal ban. This week was exciting in the clean beauty world because we welcomed the re-introduction of a federal bill to ban PFAS from beauty products, signaling an important step forward to reduce exposures to harmful chemicals. Nicknamed “forever chemicals” due to their persistence (ability to stick around in our bodies and environment for a long time), certain PFAS have been found in cosmetics, especially those designed for “long wear.” This bill would explicitly ban intentionally added PFAS, a HUGE step in the right direction, and one Beautycounter has implemented through its Never List of over 2,800+ ingredients they never use in their formulations. Has anyone conducted a leaf test on laundry detergent? We also talked about plant DNA, and if you found that intriguing, you might be interested in the leaf experiment. This test can reveal the 'truth' by showing how leaves turn black due to chemical residues. It's important to note that chemical residues left on underwear can cause skin irritation. If the leaves turn black rapidly, as shown in the leaf test photo, it suggests that similar reactions could occur on the skin. The cause of pigmentation in local areas may be chemical additives. Switching to products free from these additives can gradually reduce pigmentation. Keep in mind that detergent residues, accumulated over time, can linger on the skin for a prolonged period. Removing these residues can be a lengthy process.
