Designers like Cartier, Ghiso, and Van Cleef & Arpels crowned the Art Deco period with creations focused on geometry, intricate patterns, and the introduction of new materials. These are 3 key features are embodied in the Art Deco period's most celebrated creations. Geometry and Symmetry - During Art Deco, pieces were designed from simple shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, and triangles, with symmetry playing a main role in showcasing a sense of balance and harmony that created an aesthetic of modernity and sophistication. This characteristic extended beyond the placement of gemstones and into the gemstone cuts themselves. Intricate Patterns - Despite the prominent use of simpler geometrical shapes, Art Deco designs did not shy away from complex patterns. Chevrons, zigzags, and sunbursts are examples of patterns that were strategically placed to create depth, texture, and dramatism. Metals and Gemstones - Art Deco stepped away from classic metals like yellow gold and silver and, due to technological advancements, focused heavily on the use of platinum. The choice of gemstones was varied, with diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires, as well as semi-precious stones such a turquoise and black onyx, becoming extremely popular. Jewels are everywhere. I recently learned about the opening of this new space in the heart of Paris. It's an intriguing project aimed at strengthening the brand image through culture. Originating in 2012, it has now undergone significant expansion. Enter the École Van Cleef & Arpels, a School of Jewellery Arts, comprising a jewelry school, exhibition space, and bookstore. Its interior design skillfully balances the intricate historical codes of 19th-century architecture with a modern, fluid layout. Benito Lauret has writtten: Talking about Dior store, in a technological facade it can be always found three systems: supporting wall/frame, external finishing and internal finishing. Everyone of them deserves its own attention to performance and compatibility with the rest of systems. Let's start with external finishing, which in fact can only be done with two materials: GRC and GRP. Why? because both can adapt to complex forms as shown in this project. In some countries is easier to work with GRC (cement based) while in others GRP (polyester based) is the best choice. Both are composite materials, reinforced by glass fibre and applied by layers over a mould which has the negative form to finally extract the proper positive shape. So moulds are the key of the process and also the main input in the final price of the facade panels. In general it takes a lot of time and labour to make and finish these moulds, which means high price, which in this case cannot be diluted by panel repetition, as they are unique. Dior store uses GRP panels, connected to an internal steel frame to stiffen the panels, due to their big size. In fact this steel frame has aa accurate design to serve both to move and transport the big panels to site and to finally install them on the facade. So the external finishing system includes its own stiffening frame. Smrgb V. Ring The ring evokes the legendary Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3, a single-seater designed between 1932 and 1935 by Vittorio Jano (1891-1965). The idea is that a piece of jewellery can recall, albeit in a stylised form, a complex and sophisticated object such as a racing car. The message the ring is intended to convey is that a piece of jewellery can be more than just a decorative object.
