I recently took part in a webinar for the British Heart Foundation to provide advice for cardiac patients and their families. You can catch up on the 'Live & Ticking' recording here.. https://lnkd.in/eAnEbpMj My PhD was funded by the BHF, and my Dad's ticker is still ticking largely because of BHF funded research, so this is a charity close to my heart ❤️ 😉 The hero of the event was Alice, pictured here. She bravely shared how anxious and lonely she had felt waking up in the middle of the night, short of breath, many months after her heart attack. She described the relief of speaking to a BHF Cardiac Nurse on the Heart Helpline. “To be able to speak to someone who had knowledge, and who understood why I was afraid, was absolutely invaluable.” Sleep problems are very common for those living with heart conditions, but that doesn't mean they are inevitable. The more you worry about lack of sleep, often the worse it becomes. I recommend doing the basic things well... - ⏰ Wake up at the same time every day - ☀ Get plenty of natural daylight in the mornings, even when it's raining (though not if storm Ciaran is on the rampage ⛈ .. sit by a window instead) - 🚶♂️ Take time out each day to do something active - speak to your medical team about low risk exercise, but a walk is a great place to start - 🧘♀️ Give yourself a chance to wind down and relax in the evening before you get into bed.. relaxing music, a good book or a warm bath will help - 📗 If you often feel worried or anxious, the habit of daily journalling can help to download thoughts, and stop them whizzing around your head at night Crucially, if you are managing a chronic condition, let your medical team know if your sleep is skewiff, or if you're feeling anxious and they will be able to help support you to get things back on track #bhf #sleep #hearthealth

"On October 12, 2016, Peter Wainberg discovered that he was born with heart disease and needed urgent major surgery. This condition was a complete shock to him as a 57-year-old non-smoking and non-drinking and fit athlete. His first thought was “death” and then immediately followed by “fulfilment and life”. Mr. Wainberg said to himself at that moment “Life, is what I want” but as he looked back on his life, he realized that he was confused about many aspects of life because of an inferior education system that did not properly prepare him for adulthood. Listen to this episode via YouTube https://lnkd.in/dP7ZJ5Fz or Spotify https://lnkd.in/dr9RkrAh Peter Wainberg is an author, educator, and Life Coach specializing in Heart Health and Self-Love. Mr. Wainberg struggled to find a complete book with a basic introduction to heart health so he created his book called “My Heart Handbook”, an introduction to heart disease awareness and prevention including a list of all the test procedures and target numbers one needs to achieve to optimize their heart health. Mr. Wainberg’s passion today is to be a spokesperson about life and life’s journey to heart health. Heart Monitors: Your Ally in Managing Arrhythmias If you're navigating heart rhythm issues, a heart monitor can be a valuable tool in your arsenal. These devices come in various forms, from wearable to implantable, each designed to capture crucial data about your heart's activity. Choosing the right monitor depends on factors like the frequency and severity of your symptoms, and the duration of monitoring needed. Some are worn for a few days, while others can track your heart for weeks or longer. Certain monitors require you to trigger a recording when symptoms occur, capturing valuable data from before and after the event. Others continuously collect data, providing a comprehensive picture of your heart's rhythm. The data collected can be analyzed in real-time, alerting your care team to any concerning irregularities, or reviewed later once the device is returned. Discuss with your doctor which type of monitor best suits your specific needs. Understanding how these devices work empowers you to make informed decisions about your heart health management. Remember, a heart monitor is a powerful ally in your journey. By providing detailed insights into your heart's functioning, it can guide accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, helping you stay on top of your heart health. 💭So what does a subluxation actually FEEL like? Katya shares her experiences. "For those of you who don’t know - a subluxation is the PARTIAL dislocation of a joint and is a symptom of a hereditary connective tissue disorder, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Here’s what I’d describe it as: 💥Pain, tenderness and swelling around the joint [sometimes sharp pain, sometimes dull ache, sometimes lasts for a long time and sometimes doesn’t] ♾️ Often a subluxation happens repeatedly in a problem joint so it can become constant pain because of this 🤏Feeling of pinched nerve (shooting down, nausea) 〰️If it’s of the hips/shoulders it might radiate down the limb with nerve pain and sciatica and sometimes even numbness or loss of feeling and tingling (usually temporary), then the muscles around it will also spasm and hurt 🫠 Joint feels notably loose, unstable - you might feel it going in and out 🤜🤛 When my hips, knees or shoulders are subluxating constantly as I’m trying to walk, I can feel a grating sensation of the bones 🙅♀️Loss of mobility/loss of range of motion - you might not be able to move the area around it or it’s like it gets stuck 😱When it gets stuck you can literally get stranded [or have to get an expensive taxi home 🚕 ] ...it's a reason why for many, mobility aids are so useful to prevent the risk of getting stuck and having more freedom - AKA ambulatory wheelchair/mobility aid use." 🦽 🙌 How would you describe what subluxations feel like for you? Pop [no pun intended 🤪] your explanation in the comments for people to BETTER UNDERSTAND what we experience (even if you can’t see it!) 🗣️ Follow Katya at https://lnkd.in/exYTayn5 and Facebook https://lnkd.in/e8P9m2ZV Find a wealth of content on Katya's website about managing EDS and HSD: https://lnkd.in/eFZUQN_3 #EDS #hEDS #ehlersdanlossyndrome #subluxation #partialdislocation #ehlersdanlossyndromeawareness #EDSawareness #HSD #hypermobilityspectrumdisorder

This engaging panel with medical experts and patients is all about heart health stories and actions you can take to improve health outcomes. Real Patient Stories Medical Gaslighting Story Saraa Basaria shares her experience with a life changing heart situation. Initially, her symptoms were dismissed as stress from the work she did. Her age played a role in healthcare providers not taking her symptoms seriously and doing diagnostic testing. As a result, Saraa nearly didn't survive "I was airlifted in critical condition. It was terrifying." She shares what it was like living with an LVAD and why you must "Trust your instincts and push for thorough examinations." Reflecting on her journey and recovery, she adds, "Despite the grim prognosis, my determination and the support of my medical team and family helped me manage my condition." Hypertension Symptoms and Treatment Patty Jassak, MS, RN, CHCP, FACEhp talks about her brother's heart health scare, which reinforced her commitment to preventive care. "My brother's experience was a wake-up call for me. It made me realize how crucial it is to be vigilant about our heart health." Disrupting Patient Care Simin Gharib Lee is changing the way women experience healthcare by giving women group visits combined with nutrition and 1:1 breakouts with physicians. "Group health visits offer a unique opportunity for patients to learn from each other’s experiences and support one another through shared health challenges. These visits allow for a more interactive and comprehensive approach to care, where patients can ask questions, receive immediate feedback, and gain a deeper understanding of their health conditions. In a group setting, patients often feel more empowered and engaged, which can lead to better health outcomes and a stronger sense of community among participants."-Simin Gharib Lee Impacting Women's Health Priya Bathija Founder + CEO Nyoo Health provides insights on why it is so important to advocate for our health "We are dedicated to empowering women with the knowledge and tools they need to manage their heart health.Through our partnership with HER HEALTHX we aim to raise awareness and provide essential resources for women's heart health.
