May I note how much I love technical editors? It's a lovely feeling to be able to hand the last draft of a proposal over to a pair of fresh eyes. It comes back marked up, often with a line or five cut out. And then it's such a breeze to go through, accept or reject changes, and tidy it up for submission. In addition to these frameworks, I've been thinking a lot about "Docs as Design", where documentation is part of the user design of products. I've been working within the design team at Waymo, and I've been drawing heavily up upon user research the design team does to improve my documentation. I've begun to think of documentation as "Everything that needs to be described to the user outside the user interface". One way this plays out if that if you have a poorly designed product or system then you need more documentation to explain how the thing works and how to use it, whereas an elegantly designed product requires minimal documentation. There's also organizational benefits for technical writers to be paired with designers and researchers who are also trying to deeply understand users.
