New year and new projects! As part of the Pro Bono service that VTA Tassin is delivering every year, founder Virginie Tassin Campanella, based on her expertise of seabed and ocean observation, was invited to join the Joint Task Force on SMART Submarine Cables, with a new team and agenda starting from 2024. This task force is designed to support the Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications (SMART) Subsea Cables Initiative which seeks to revolutionize deep sea observing by equipping transoceanic telecommunications cables with sensors to provide novel and persistent insights into the state of the ocean, at a modest incremental cost. These cables are indeed designed to play a critical role for the monitoring of climate change, ocean heat content, circulation, sea level rise, early warnings for earthquakes and tsunamis, and monitor seismic activity for earth structure and related hazards. This task force is made up of 3 United Nations organizations: the International Telecommunications Union (#ITU), the World Meteorological Organization (#WMO), and the Intergovermental Oceanographic Commission (#IOC UNESCO). #Temperature is an essential #oceanographic variable (EOV) that still today remains coarsely resolved below the surface and near the #seafloor. Here, the authors gather evidence to confirm that Distributed #Acoustic Sensing (DAS) #technology can convert tens of kilometer-long seafloor fiber-optic telecommunication cables into dense #arrays of temperature anomaly #sensors having millikelvin (mK) sensitivity, thus allowing to monitor #oceanic processes such as #internalwaves and upwelling with unprecedented detail. Notably, they report #highresolution observations of highly coherent near-inertial and super-inertial internal waves in the NW Mediterranean sea, offshore of Toulon, France, having spatial extents of a few kilometers and producing maximum thermal anomalies of more than 5 K at maximum absolute rates of more than 1 K/h. They validated their observations with in-situ oceanographic sensors and an alternative optical fiber sensing technology. Currently, DAS only provides temperature changes estimates, however practical solutions are outlined to obtain continuous absolute temperature measurements with DAS at the seafloor. Their observations grant key advantages to DAS over established temperature sensors, showing its transformative potential for the description of seafloor temperature fluctuations over an extended range of spatial and temporal scales, as well as for the understanding of the evolution of the #ocean in a broad sense (e.g. physical and ecological). Environmental factors, such as temperature gradients, salinity variations, underwater topography, and ambient noise, impact the performance and reliability of underwater acoustic communication systems. Research efforts focus on modeling underwater acoustic channels, characterizing environmental effects, and developing adaptive communication techniques to mitigate the effects of channel impairments and enhance communication reliability in dynamic underwater environments. Underwater acoustic communication plays a pivotal role in enabling connectivity, data exchange, and command and control capabilities in underwater environments, supporting a wide range of applications in ocean exploration, scientific research, maritime surveillance, and offshore operations. "As NOAA busily prepares for the June launch of the last satellite in the GOES-R series, GOES-U, it is already working on the next series of advanced geostationary satellites—the Geostationary Extended Observations mission, or GeoXO. When GeoXO launches in the early 2030s, it will include several new state-of-the-art instruments onboard. Great to see that the Virtual Integration of Satellite and In-Situ Observation Networks (VISION) project has been funded through the NERC-Met Office TWINE programme for digital twins of the natural environment (https://lnkd.in/ezu6H9Rk). The National Centre for Atmospheric Science led team, including Luke Abraham and Maria Russo, will be combining atmospheric observations and models to optimise flight paths for research aircraft so that future research missions are more efficient with lower CO2 emissions. #digitaltwin #environment #carbonemissions

The use of satellites to monitor and track carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions is becoming more pressing than ever, and it will revolutionise the way that greenhouse gas emissions are tracked and monitored. Satellite observations of the earth's surface will yield comprehensive data on things like land cover, biomass in forests, fires, and biological productivity. We can estimate a variety of GHG gas types and their spatial distribution using this enormous dataset. Modern space technology can help us achieve both our energy security and climate goals.
