A year ago today, I started at IMAX, but due to the elimination of my role earlier this April I can’t help but compare the feeling to reeling from a bad break up - one you thought was going great when you get hit with the “we need to talk” talk. Break ups suck and layoffs are the equivalent of the “it’s not you, it’s me” line. By it's very premise, it isn’t your fault, but you question whether you could have done anything differently anyway. After all, it is human nature to desire control over such situations versus inevitably accepting that you had no choice in the matter. Personally, I miss the people I've connected with more than anything. No company is perfect but I drove through the 405 every single day, investing time, effort and energy because I got to do it with people I enjoyed working with. “Too bad, so sad” as my son would say. Many in the entertainment and media industry struggle with this as we continue to be impacted by downsizing, restructuring and layoffs. It's disheartening but you have to gather yourself and be ready to put your best self out there once again. I’ve only reached out to a few colleagues when this happened so consider this post officially putting myself out there! I am a Creative Manager, and while I do thrive in project management, I love having a creative outlet, being a creative thinker and producer. I lead with empathy and will always value people over projects. I have production and post production experience with an eye for detail and quality control. I would love to get more marketing experience or something involved in the DEI space so if you know any leads, you know where to find me! If you’ve read this far, thank you. The last thing I want to share is though I haven’t had much luck with full-time employment, I have recently done some freelance work. Here’s a special shout out to Jannelle So-Perkins and Rhea Guia Castillo for the opportunity to tap back into my segment producing and hosting days! Sharing the latest piece we worked on: https://lnkd.in/gc2CxCaM

Today I woke up thinking about “group genius.” I’d been to Seattle a total of three times before I started at T-Mobile — which just happens to be six years ago today. Each time there was some sort of a group focus. The first time, it was to see a concert. The third time, for a day-long interview loop. That second time, though, it was to give a talk: “Embrace the Cliches: The collaborative genius of rock bands, romantic comedies, and slow claps.” The central theme was that we all face different moments throughout life, alternating between being part of a group and taking a solo turn. Sometimes these moments are within our control, like quitting our pickleball league. Sometimes they are one of the many seasons of life, like an illness. But once you have that blueprint for “group genius,” you can glide through those moments of being alone and find yourself on the other side, back in collaboration. Six years ago today, I started this part of my career as a solo act. Today, I have as many other collaborators on the team I oversee as years I have been building out this function at T-Mobile. And numerous others across the company, and outside it as well. It’s always of comfort to me to remember that a solo turn may lead you to your next act, and that could be a supergroup — a position I am fortunate to find myself in today. #team #creativity #collaboration #genius

Tuesday Tales: Corporate Gibberish - "Rockstar" Great job, you're a "rockstar!" I’ve tossed that term around a few times at work and have even been dubbed one. Interestingly, while I've met sales colleagues with genuine musical talent, my own musical abilities are decidedly non-existent. Not even close. Every time someone slaps that label on me, I can’t help but chuckle. It’s funny how we pick up these bits of corporate lingo, isn’t it? "Rockstar" used to mean headlining at Madison Square Garden, and now it’s about nailing a presentation or closing a deal. I guess we’ve all got our stages. What other interesting terms have you heard used to describe a great performance at work? #corporatehumour

As I wait to hear back on whether I get to move on in the hiring process for #disney, I rewatched Soul and thought a lot about my Purpose. Like a lot of people, I got caught up in equating my job to my Purpose. I used to thing that it was my Purpose to be a good storyteller, to connect with people through my work and convey meaning, understanding, and emotion. When that work was gone, I felt like my Purpose went with it. Who was I, if I wasn't doing what I felt I was put here to do? It took a lot of time, and a lot of introspection, to come to understand that my Purpose was not what I did, but who I was as a person. I was not a Creative Producer. I was a person who found joy in connecting with people. I was a person who took pride in my ability to understand and convey understanding. I was a person who was passionate in everything I was interested in, a person whose love ran deep. I was not put on this earth to make ads or push KPIs or win awards. My Purpose was not a jacket that I put on whenever I showed up for work, and taken off as I left for home. My Purpose is with me at all times, fueling everything I did whether I got paid for it or not. I am here to be passionate about this world that we live in, and to share knowledge and joy with others. A job can't give that to me, and losing a job won't take that away. It is, instead, the Spark that makes me special. It is what I bring to the table, and I hope that it is what people will see when I sit down across from them. I know a lot of us here are looking for work, and the rejections feel like we don't have a Purpose anymore. Please believe me, it is still there. It never left... but it might not be what you think it is. Close your eyes and think about who you are when no one is looking, what you do that makes you happy, who you are when you are alone with yourself. That is your Spark. #disneylife #disneyjobs #disneymagic
