6 months on from the #UNClimateChangeConference #COP28 in #Dubai, where nearly #200Nations coalesced around a realistic plan - the #UAEConsensus - the city has been anchoring the foundations to aid its committment to a 'low-carbon and inclusive' economic future. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (#DEWA) announced that it has attracted AED 43.6Bn in infrastructure FDI focused on clean energy, renewables and desalination projects over the past decade. Aligned with the ambitious Dubai Clean Energy and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategies earmarked for 2050, government efforts have sought to strengthen research, deepen collaboration, and champion knowledge exchange with partners. DEWA adopted the globally-tested Independent Power and Water Producer (#IPWP) model for its #SolarPark, #NaturalGas fuelled Power Complex, and the pioneering #ReverseOsmosis desalination plant projects as some of the project pipeline. Dubai Airports announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Etihad Clean Energy Development Company to initiate the world’s largest rooftop solar panel installation project at an airport. The announcement took place in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer during the World Green Economy Summit at the Dubai World Trade Centre on October 2-3, 2024. This initiative aligns with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision to establish Dubai as one of the most sustainable cities in the world with goal of achieving 25% clean energy by 2030 and 100% by 2050. This ambitious project will install 62,904 solar panels across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) airports, generating 60,346 MWh annually and offsetting 23,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions—equivalent to removing 5,000 cars from the road. The solar energy will supply 6.5% of DXB’s and 20% of DWC’s power needs by 2026. This solar initiative complements Dubai Airports' ongoing environmental efforts, including LED retrofitting and biodiesel-powered ground vehicles, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable future.
