The man who built Manchester's Tech Startup Ecosystem from 2006 to 2013. 2 Exits. Runs 3 companies: Techcelerate (trusted tech founder network), Deal Lite (Intelligence) and SkilledUp Life (50,000 volunteers 4 startups)
It's International Women's Day - celebrating women globally! I learned about this yesterday and as a business, SkilledUp Life ought to be better prepared to leverage such. At SkilledUp Life, we never consider whether a person is male or female. There was a period when I thought women were best suited than men for HR roles as we had early abandonments. But Precious Azor and Esteban Gabriel Leon proved my initial thoughts were incorrect. It's very easy to build biases and we all need self-correction from time to time. Whilst I have not counted, I am more than sure most of my team at SkilledUp Life are female. And I believe it's the same with Deal Lite. And if we surveyed our 42,600+ skilled volunteer base, I am also convinced that more females have signed up than men. Quite a number of tech founders who signed up to leverage our volunteers are female, including Katie Lips chiraz Bensemmane Susan D. and so many others. But when it comes to Techcelerate's tech founders, men outnumber women by a mile. Susan D. and Katie Lips outshine us. Whilst not a tech founder, we also have Lisa P. - an amazing individual. In terms of leadership roles: https://deallite.uk - Head of Data Collection & Publishing Esther Andrew - Head of Deal Lite Web App Data Olubukola Kolade https://skilledup.life - Head of HR Cecilia K. - Head of Support Chidinma Mba - Head of Partnerships Janet Akpan And all our software since 2011 is built by Asinsala Silva from edocr.com (2011 to 2015), UnifiedVU Deal Lite and now SkilledUp Life. She has been a trusted team mate ever since she joined my crazy ventures. Latest to join the leadership team is Abidemi Olaitan-Hambolu who brings significant experience to our team. In her day job, she is head of sales for a large organisation. In evenings, she is volunteering for us. She has the task of building our business in Nigeria. We are looking for creating many opportunities for men and women from all over the world. All we are doing is giving a chance - then it's up to them to grab it and drive it. We will respond and improve as we move along. Here's to every woman! 🥂 PS: At home, I am ruled by three women! There is no escape! 😂 #IWD #internationalwomensday2024 #internationalwomensday #skilleduplife #upskill #experience #work #jobs

Empowering ambitious women in Tech & Media to achieve career clarity & intentional change through 1:1 coaching & actionable processes | EMCC Accredited Coach @ Senior Practitioner Level | 20 years in Tech & Media
What a rich variety of talks, and that’s just Day 1 of #WomenInTechWeek 🚀 It’s the first-ever nationwide celebration of women in tech in the UK, and with over 70 events, online and in-person, there’s so much valuable insight to absorb! Day 1 Highlights: 🔸 Dr Vanessa Vallely OBE reminded us that women make up only 24% of the tech workforce—a modest increase from 17% in 2017. However, troublingly, the last two years have seen a decline of the number of women in tech and engineering, with 1 in 5 women considering leaving the industry altogether. 🔸 Debbie Foster and Karen Blake from the Tech Talent Charter call to action for companies. Their powerful message? We must address this as a systemic issue to make lasting change. 🔸 A heartfelt session on social mobility stood out, where speakers shared their stories and spoke of how feelings of shame had been replaced with pride to be role models for those joining the industry. They highlighted the power of self-belief and good mentors in overcoming imposter syndrome and the ongoing need to address biases in recruitment. 🔸 We heard from Labour MP Sam Niblett on the government’s plan to close the digital skills gap and how it aims to support the future of women in tech. 🔸 Closing the day, we listened to the triumphs and challenges faced by Black women in tech, with inspiring stories of the companies that are stepping up to support real change. My Takeaway: Despite my frustrations on the speed of change, I’m left feeling hopeful. There are incredible women making significant strides in this space, and community is key. The collective wisdom was clear: don’t reinvent the wheel—use the tools, data, and networks we already have to drive real progress. This isn’t just a women’s issue; so if you consider yourself an ally or champion of this cause, I encourage you to check out this week's events or watch the LinkedIn Live sessions! 💻 https://lnkd.in/evSbiNS6

Global research from Plan International and CNN has found that 1 in 10 girls and young women reported having harmful online experiences daily. This must change. Being able to safely take part in the debates and opportunities of the modern world is a human right and critical to achieving #GenderEquality. Read this report to hear directly from young women and girls about the harms they face online and how tech companies and governments should play a part in keeping them safe. #AsEquals. https://lnkd.in/eRJVAcJz

Women Techmakers (WTM) is Google’s programme for women in technology to find community, amplify their individual brands, and discover resources. Every year Women Techmakers identifies and recruits Ambassadors for their programme who play a key role in promoting the community by hosting events, giving speeches, creating content, and mentoring other women in tech. To celebrate the inspiring stories of these Ambassadors, Google has launched the Women Techmakers Story Map, an immersive, interactive web experience built with Google Maps Platform.
