AI represents a new frontier of combining machine learning and human knowledge to create positive outcomes. However, AI is only one piece of the student success puzzle. At the University of South Florida, professionals used machine learning and practitioner insights to grow their enrollment. Their team concluded, "The most important part is the human behind the analytics." Take a look at the Society for College and University Planning’s article for more insights and examples! #HigherEducation #AIinEducation #MachineLearning #StudentOutcomes

"Navigating the rapidly changing world of generative artificial intelligence is like trying to escape quicksand; the more you resist, the more you find yourself immersed. And let’s face it, artificial intelligence tools are thoroughly embedded in our lives, from online shopping and customer service chatbots through to the algorithms driving social media feeds. For those of us in the higher education sector, we are now looking at how to responsibly leverage this technology in research and teaching, while supporting students to use these tools, where appropriate, in ways that uphold academic integrity." Opinion: Navigating through quicksand? Using GenAI ethically by Professor Giselle Byrnes and Associate Professor Ruggiero (Rino) Lovreglio. In ongoing conversations around #AI, many believe universities are uniquely positioned to assess its true impact on #education, #business, and society. Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun emphasized this in The Chronicle of Higher Education, highlighting universities' expertise in fostering "robot-proof" skills and acting as "honest brokers." He stressed the importance of systematically evaluating humanity's place and future in an AI world, saying: "To my mind, there is one societal institution that is ideally positioned to provide this kind of accounting: the university." Our latest In the AI Loop newsletter examines how Northeastern is leading the way in preparing businesses and students in these areas, with insights from Usama Fayyad, Margaret Angell, Dan Koloski, Liz Kohler, Michael Pollastri, Joseph Doiron, Colleen Thibeault, Zach Blattner, Hilary Farrell Prosnitz, and Hamit Hamutcu. AI can better education, not threaten it, if we learn some lessons from the adoption of the calculator into the classroom, Arizona State University President Michael Crow, ACE's Ted Mitchell and Derrick Anderson, and professor Nicole Mayberry write in a Scientific American op-ed. Today, The University of Texas at Dallas held its first AI Day. Victoria McCrady joined me in person and Kathryn Lookadoo online and a huge group of faculty and staff to learn from UTA and Microsoft about GenAI. Kishore Thakur MC'd and organized, and did a fantastic job. Overheard after this event: "What a great way to spend an afternoon." We delved into how AI is reshaping our work. A recurring theme? “GenAI augments human capabilities and streamlines tasks.” However, I see a significant split between GenAI tasks and uses for the corporate sphere and academia, given privacy restrictions for student data. (Given FERPA, think we'll ever be able to plug a grade book or student email about a concern into a GenAI tool?) The big hope: AI is about taking the busy work away, enabling us to focus on creativity and innovation. It’s not about replacing humans -- whether student affairs staff or teaching faculty, but about empowering us to work more efficiently while staying true to our values. Looking forward to seeing how these ideas will transform our workflows -- and how that differs across industries! #GenerativeAI #HumanPotential #Innovation #UTDallas
