Cory Doctorow's fabulously written, expert knowledge based essay into how society's promise of a liberating internet has turned us into 'shitty' ads guzzling, captured zombies with few rights and declining meaning, is a must read. The thing is, though. We aren't victims. He watch stupid #tiktok videos, we spend countless hours buying fake money with real one on moronic games, we #doomscroll inane pics on #instagram, we go on #megacruises monstrosities with free access to our credit cards, gobling 'entertainment' and #ultraprocessedfood, we buy cars that we use less than 5 percent of the time and work 30 percent of the time to pay for, we turn away from innovative artists who can't afford to create by directing our attention to #megastars whose wealth and fame are nowhere near related to their talent, we cry over ecosystem destruction while flying cheap and nasty airlines to cheap and nasty resorts in beautiful places choking under the enormity of our combined weight. It's us. It's all us. And it's all on us. Who remember #buildbackbetter? Noone. That was just the fast-fashion of the moment, the lazy cliché of a culture of mass reproduction and just about zero imagination, and even less courage. It's on us. And the delusion that we can have it all is crashing harder and harder. So, what do we do about it? We vote Trump, Wilders, Le Pen because they tell us that it's all going to be okay. That all we have to do is blame the brown and yellow guys, and that by going back to yesterday we will be able to continue as if there are no facts. #Postmodernism has delivered on its promise. We’re hardwired for instant gratification. That’s why a new pair of shoes feels better than a solid 401k. It’s why TikTok trumps textbooks. Our brains are built for the short game, not the long haul. Imagine waking up at forty without a creaky back. Twenty minutes a day, that’s all it takes. Now, that’s a hell of an investment return. The problem? Good things take time. Lots of time. The magic of compounding interest, the serenity of a healthy body, the exhilaration of intellectual growth – these are marathon rewards, not sprint victories. It’s easy to see why we’re tempted by the shiny objects. But maybe, just maybe, the greatest returns in life come from betting on the boring. Think decades, not days. It’s not rocket science. It’s a tough argument to keep your kids off of social media. • I’ve completely blocked it. • I’ve went the route of trying to moderate their usage. • I’ve went the route of setting parental controls and screen time limits • and even some very creative things with our Wi-Fi and access points. But the most successful thing I’ve done is to help them improve the content that the algorithm shows them, by sending them videos. Find inspirational things. Find interesting thought pieces. Find things that are going to mentally build them up. And I push videos to them. By text. By dm. Any way I can, to help the algorithm pump them more of the positive stuff… and less stupid dance videos or non-productive entertainment. What ways are you attacking the flooding stream of unproductive content from your children’s algorithms?

Attribution’s a Cliffhanger The reason why many people hate attribution is because there’s no resolution. It’s an open loop, a cliffhanger. “Tune in next week to see the conclusion of what ad platform lead to the conversion…”. Human psychology drives people to find closed loops…and attribution is an open loop.

Scientists of TikTok. Please consider the Big Beam Theory. Simply put; The universe presents itself as standing particles, and particles begin to take on gravity.
