We’re proud to be a woman-owned business and law firm! 🥂 A 2022 survey by the American Bar Association found that 38% of the more than 1.3 million lawyers in the U.S. are women, which is a 5% increase over the past decade. However, recent studies by the National Association of Women Lawyers and the National Association for Law Placement, showed that although the number of women in the junior ranks of big law firms is sizeable, those figures plummet at the partnership and leadership levels.⁠ ⁠ Not only are we a woman-owned business, but we're also a woman-owned Certified B Corp! #DYK that compared to other businesses, Certified B Corps are 1.6 times more likely to have a Board of Directors comprised of a majority of women or individuals from other underrepresented populations. In today's Q&A spotlight, we feature Katherine Murchison, a New York associate in the business litigation group. Katherine's practice supports complex commercial and fiduciary litigation across the United States. Q: What advice would you give to women looking to advance their careers? A: My advice for all women is to be confident. There is a unique power in trusting yourself and your intuition. You will be amazed by the strength you can find within if you look for it. Don’t let anyone make you feel small. Speak boldly and hold your head high. Q: What role has mentorship played in your professional growth? A: I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the folks who saw potential and poured into me. Time is the most precious resource, and I am honored by the many people who have shared theirs with me. A close mentor once said “You’d be surprised what happens when you push a door open.” I’ve always liked this distinction from the idea that opportunities would simply open before me. Instead, I often keep a look out for small openings that may lead to greatness if acted upon. Not-so-fun fact: For the first time in more than 50 years the enrollment of women in law school is on the decline, and many law schools are struggling even to fill 40% of their incoming 1L classes with women. Female law students constitute only a third of law review editors-in-chief in the nation’s top 50 schools, and women still constitute less than a third of Supreme Court clerks. This needs to change. We are proud of Ms. JD’s role in supporting women who aspire to careers in law. But Ms. JD is doing more than that: we are bringing talent and fresh perspective to the field. Abby Spears, Nason Yeager attorney, authored an article in the Florida Association for Women Lawyers (FAWL) Journal regarding the exodus of women from law firms. Despite more women enrolling in law school and now outnumbering men, female attorneys still face significant underrepresentation in law firm leadership roles. Contributing factors to this disparity include caretaking commitments, stress, and work-life balance issues, with solutions requiring mentorship, advocacy for parental leave policies, and intentional networking.
