Just landed back in the UK after an exhilarating week at #GartnerAPPS summit. The M25 is slow so I have time for a follow up post (I'm not driving!!)

What the heck is that???
By building and sharing standard approaches to software delivery as "products" with the intent of helping #SoftwareEngineering teams get their jobs done (#JobsToBeDone from the late, great Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School) you will make more valuable progress than simply imposing the "ivory tower" view of right, or best.
I have to call out some credits and inspirations...
- Doug Macklem for coining the term "Voluntary Standardization" in a conversation about #PlatformEngineering a couple of years ago. [hope you are doing well Doug!]
- Steven Shorrock for his work on humanistic systems and the varieties of human work https://lnkd.in/e6U6ysgd
Discovering Steven's work has been life changing for me...it explains so much of what is wrong with product and process design, and often leadership. I cannot "unsee" it and it explains so many issues, frustrations and, in some cases, reasons for success.
At the conference, I applied it as a framework for maximising understanding and alignment between software engineering teams and platform teams. However, i think you can take the lessons from Steven's model and apply them to almost any situation where mutual understanding is a critical risk mitigation. If I've butchered the original intent, I apologise to Steven, but if feedback from the audience, clients and colleagues is anything to go by, I think it could be an incredibly powerful tool for #SoftwareEngineeringLeaders, #EnterpriseArchitecture and other disciplines.

Yesterday Richard Watson and I put the record straight on the relationship between #InternalDeveloperPortals like #Backstage and #InternalDeveloperPlatforms...you may need both, but if you don't have a robust set of platform capabilities, having a portal is probably not going to deliver the outcomes you need.
During the session, the amazing Axelle Vanquaillie did a live visualisation of the key messages during the session (attached)... and for extra #GenAI points, she told us at least one delegate took a photo and instantly converted it to a session summary 😲, smart move! I guess you can do the same now I've shared the photo 😀.

Why?
AI and automation are reducing the capital required to achieve scale at the same time there has been a surge in the total number of companies while outbound is 4x less effective..... but what about the shoes?! Not Data?
For Allbirds a 47% loss after a disappointing earnings report that included a $101 million annual loss and a 13% drop in quarterly sales.
