Manjummel Boys, which released in February, is the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all-time, having grossed about 160 cr in India, and still going strong. It has been supported by a slew of compelling Malayalam films, and the share of Malayalam cinema stands at the box-office currently stands at about 18%, which is a staggering three times its share in 2022 and 2023. Malayalam cinema is high on content (theme, concept, story, etc.), and relies far lesser on stars than its Telugu, Tamil and Hindi counterparts. It's wonderful to see regional language films take the lead at the National awards this year. But this was bound to happen. I'd say that Malayalam films were making OTT-ready content, even before OTT came into existence. The reason is their human-insight led powerful scripts, that eschew stars and mindless masala. Take the winning film 'Aattam' which explores how quickly we let go of our values in the face of personal gain. I'm happy for Tamil cinema too. OTT has freed talented filmmakers and actors from the clutch of mindless masala entertainers, geriatric superstars and B grade Bollywood glam heroines. 'Thiruchitrambalam' and shows like 'Sweet karam coffee' will encourage more films to break away from the suffocating hold of the past. Congratulations to Kannada films too, finally you get your independent spot under the sun! Excited to note the entry of Haryanvi films. Hopefully we'll see a lot more rich stuff from them in the future. Soon, I hope to catch 'Kutch Express'. The plot seems good and if it's anything like 'Rewa' the Gujarati movie I recently saw, I'm in for an entertaining watch for sure. Well, giants Bollywood and Tollywood, there's a lot of learning for you from your smaller counterparts: Think original. Think beyond super stars. Think beyond box office and cinema halls. Think stories that revolve around real people and their struggles. Cinema Gyan - A book inspiring Hindi Filmmakers In India, there is a significant number of aspiring filmmakers who primarily speak Hindi and are deeply passionate about creating films. However, they often face substantial challenges due to the dominance of English on many educational and professional platforms related to filmmaking. This language barrier can prevent them from fully understanding critical inputs and concepts, leading to a gap between their vision and the final output. As a result, many talented individuals may inadvertently fall into the wrong hands or lose confidence in their abilities when their projects do not turn out as they envisioned. It is crucial to bridge this gap by providing more resources and support in Hindi to empower these creators. By doing so, we can unlock a wealth of untapped potential and enrich the Indian film industry with diverse and authentic voices. From a rejected film institute candidate to a classic director - what can we learn from director Blessy as Adujeevitham hits theatres? My Friday Film thoughts There are many lessons to be learned from the 16-year-long arduous journey that director Blessy undertook for the movie Aadujeevitham, especially for those who quit their jobs for trivial reasons. In his memoir "Jeevitham Adujeevitham", published by Manorama Books, Blessy describes the difficult journeys he took for the movie. After reaching the Rajasthan desert in search of the setting of the novel, Blessy realized that it was not what he wanted for the movie. He then started traveling to Oman and Saudi Arabia in search of the setting.  However, he was denied permission to shoot there. Finally, he shot the movie in Jordan and Algeria. Blessy and the crew, including Prithviraj, faced great challenges when they were stranded in Jordan during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, overcoming numerous obstacles, Blessy led the team like a captain and moved forward. Blessy, who lost his father at the age of three and his mother before he reached adolescence, has struggled a lot to become a film director. He failed the Film Institute entrance exams and later started his film career as an assistant to Padmarajan. Through hard work, he earned the reputation of being one of the best associate directors in the Malayalam Film Industry. Then he became a classic director in Malayalam. These experiences helped Blessy when he had to live in the deserts for the movie Aadujeevitham. Through various mental approaches, such as the cricket match he organized to revive the morale of the team that was stranded during the COVID-19 period, Blessy always kept his team charged. After a long shooting schedule in the desert, Blessy brought music legend AR Rahman himself to the shooting location to cheer up the exhausted team. Thus, Aadujeevitham, which emerged as a wonder on the silver screen, was the result of Blessy leading the team like a captain through challenges. If you are willing to go to any distance for the perfection of a creation, that creation will be elevated to great heights. #teamwork #success #motivation

One major reason is the adherence to rigid narrative structures, such as the three-act structure or the six-stage theory. This structural slavery results in predictable stories, killing the element of surprise and engagement that audiences crave. In contrast, Malayalam cinema offers a refreshing approach. While they take cues from screenplay gurus, they don’t strictly follow any set rules. Instead, they weave stories with local flavors, akin to friends sharing tales around a campfire. This organic storytelling resonates deeply with audiences, creating an immersive experience. Hindi film creative heads, however, often leave no room for the "moment"—the core aim of any story that leaves a lasting impact. If the current structures and rules are not yielding desired results, it is high time to look beyond them. Stories should not be mere slaves to structure; they should be free to surprise, delight, and move audiences. Hollywood’s decline in romantic comedies serves as a cautionary tale. Overemphasis on act-driven screenplays led to a creative stagnation that ultimately killed the genre. Hindi cinema must learn from this and embrace a more flexible, innovative approach to storytelling, ensuring that the magic of cinema is preserved and revitalized.

Gnanambika (1940), the second sound film in Malayalam, echoed the success of its predecessor Balan (1938) with its engaging storyline and outdoor shooting locations. Produced by Annamalai Chettiar and directed by S Nottani, it is adapted from a novel by C Madhavan Pillai. The film follows Gnanambika, daughter of wealthy landlord Rajasekharan, mistreated by her stepmother Rajamani. The heroic Raveendran intervenes, portrayed with anti-heroic traits, setting a new trend in Malayalam cinema. Featuring fights, car chases, romance, and 15 songs with lyrics by Puthenkavu Mathen Tharakan, the film utilised popular tunes from Hindi and other languages. Notably, Sebastian Kunju Kunju Bhagavathar's rendition of Katha ithu kelkan, sahajare vaa became a standout. Despite no existing prints, the film's songs remain cherished. These films have all been critically acclaimed and commercially successful, marking a positive change for the industry. The Malayalam film industry has been struggling in recent years due to a lack of high-quality films and the rise of OTT platforms. However, the recent success of these films is attributed to several factors, including strong content, talented actors and writers, and a shift in audience preferences. Malayalam films are now finding success not only in Kerala but also in other states across India. Overall, the article suggests that the Malayalam film industry is entering a new golden age.
