A smaller proportion of health-system pharmacists can independently prescribe a medication pursuant to a diagnosis than they did from 2020 to 2023, according to provisional survey data presented at the ASHP Midyear2024 Clinical Meeting & Exhibition, in New Orleans. The percentage of hospital #pharmacists with such prescribing authority ranged from 21% to 31% in previous years, and stands at 17.5% in 2024. I bet it’s higher for non-health systems pharmacists.

**🚀 The Evolution of Pharmacy: From Dispensing Medications to Clinical Care!** Pharmacy is transforming, and today’s pharmacists are stepping beyond traditional roles to become key players in patient care. Modern pharmacists don’t just fill prescriptions—they work alongside doctors and nurses to improve outcomes. 🌟 Here’s why this shift is essential: ### **1️⃣ Medication Therapy Management (MTM)** Pharmacists help patients understand and manage complex treatments, optimizing medication for safety and effectiveness. **MTM improves adherence, reduces side effects, and prevents unnecessary hospital visits.** ### **2️⃣ Chronic Disease Support** In conditions like diabetes and hypertension, pharmacists provide **ongoing support and education**, helping patients manage their illness with lifestyle advice and medication adjustments. ### **3️⃣ Patient Counseling** Accessible and knowledgeable, pharmacists offer **personalized counseling** to enhance patient confidence, improve adherence, and ensure patients understand their medications. ### **4️⃣ Preventing Medication Errors** By double-checking prescriptions and identifying potential interactions, **pharmacists protect patients** from harmful drug combinations and adverse reactions. --- ### **The Future of Pharmacy** As healthcare moves toward collaboration, pharmacists are expanding their roles in hospitals, primary care, and telemedicine. Interesting to see how pharmacy technicians are advancing in their roles across the globe: https://zurl.co/YjxV Recent insights from the Netherlands indicate an evolving role for pharmacy technicians within the framework of Clinical Medication Reviews (CMRs). As community pharmacies embrace more complex healthcare roles, delegating initial CMR tasks to qualified pharmacy technicians can significantly enhance operational efficiency. This strategy allows pharmacists to concentrate on more critical aspects of patient care and medication management, optimizing both patient outcomes and collaborative healthcare practices. Such integrative approaches underscore the growing importance of educating and empowering pharmacy technicians in advancing healthcare services, positioning them as essential members of the health care team. #PharmacyTechnician

ePMA: Safer prescribing for our patients 🏥 Following on from the good news that the Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (ePMA) system went live across the ED and Urgent Care settings at West Cumberland Hospital in February, Daniel Ivison, Lead Clinical Pharmacist - Electronic Prescribing, reflects on the impact this has had on colleagues and patients. 💬 "The ePMA system is a digital software program used to detail prescription information, as well as medication histories, ordering of medicines and recording when drugs have been administered. This project is about replacing the current paper based system with software that is fit for the digital age we are living in, meaning our prescribing and medicines administration will be done digitally. We’ll be leaving behind paper medicines charts and prescriptions on our acute adult inpatient wards and A&E departments; paper charts will be a thing of the past. The go-live at WCH progressed well with system adoption and positive engagement from all. It was a great team effort from clinical staff, the ePMA team, digital, communication and pharmacy teams. There has been an incredible collaborative effort across multiple teams to piece the puzzle together and ensure that the system works seamlessly in the context of existing clinical processes and with other digital systems currently in-place across the Trust. Colleagues have quickly got up to speed with the new system and have been satisfied with the benefits it offers. We have found that even the most apprehensive staff members have been surprised by how easy the system is to use and how quickly it has become ingrained into their daily routines, fully appreciating the benefits of digital prescribing over paper-based processes." #ePMA

"Pharmacists have the trust of the public and we welcome that 96% of people agree that they get a good service in a convenient manner" as stated in IPN. The introduction of prescribing pharmacists in Ireland is expected to have significant effects on the healthcare system. This move could enhance patient access to medications, improve medication management, and potentially reduce healthcare costs. With pharmacists being able to prescribe certain medications, it could lead to more streamlined care and quicker treatment for patients. This change may also bring about a shift in traditional healthcare roles, empowering pharmacists to take on a more active role in patient care. #PharmacyCare #HealthcareInnovation #communitypharmacy Do we have enough pharmacists to meet the expected the public demand?
