As the Head of Space Operations at GACA, my team and I are navigating the evolving landscape of Higher Airspace Operations (HAO), an area where technological advancements are rapidly reshaping the aviation industry. With the growing use of high-altitude platforms (HAPS), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and the increasing frequency of commercial space operations, HAO represents both an opportunity and a challenge. The recent discussions at the 14th Air Navigation Conference (AN-Conf/14) highlighted the pressing need for international cooperation and regulatory frameworks. With higher airspace sitting at the intersection of conventional aviation and space operations, there is a growing necessity for integrated airspace management systems that can ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable use of this emerging domain. ICAO has been instrumental in bringing together member states to share experiences and align on best practices to address the operational complexities of HAO.
