Some important news coming out of Europe today which will make some good headway into reducing their agricultural emissions. I think these are agreements that we need to pay attention to and consider what effect it may have on us, and if that's the route we also need to go down. In summary: - EU Nations have agreed to restore 20% of land and waters by 2030 - This includes restoring 30% of habitats in poor condition - Member states will also need to restore peatlands and reverse pollinator decline - These goals increase significantly each of the following decades - EU member countries must establish organic soil restoration measures in areas used for agriculture that constitute drained peatlands. - They must restore a minimum of 30 percent of these areas by 2030 and rewet a quarter (this increases every following decade) - Rewetting will remain a voluntary process for private landowners and farmers. - EU nations will also be required to reverse pollinator decline by 2030 (measured at least every 6 years) - They must also put measures in place to achieve an upward trend in several forest ecosystems indicators - Countries must guarantee that urban ecosystems experience no net loss of total urban green space or urban tree canopy cover (measured every 6 years min) However there is one important caveat for food production: An emergency brake provision was agreed upon so that agricultural ecosystems targets can be suspended in the event of exceptional circumstances related to land required for food production. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This seems like a sensible take. Let's do everything we can do stop using peat, rewet peatlands, stop removing trees and reduce carbon emissions, but not yank the rug out from under our food production. It also means that private landowners and farmers don't need to worry that their land will be taken off them (although it would be great if they were incentivised to turn it back into wet peatland). Meanwhile there are several of us working very hard to come up with alternate solutions so that handbrake need never be applied. #fleecegrow #sheepwoolgrowingmedia

👉 Breaking news: The Council of the European Union has formally adopted the regulation on #nature #restoration. 💚 This law aims to put measures in place to restore at least 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas by 2030, and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. 🌊 🏔🏙🌲🌳 It sets specific, legally binding targets and obligations for nature restoration in each of the listed ecosystems – from terrestrial to marine, freshwater and urban #ecosystems. 🌍 The regulation aims to mitigate #climatechange and the effects of natural disasters.
