We need to redesign and rethink the Sustainable Mediterranean Diet, taking into consideration the pollution impact of industrial fish farming, the sustainability of Mediterranean fish stocks, the impact of industrial activities to local communities, and the social justice we own to the most vulnerable. We need to talk to each other. Wij.land works collaboratively with farmers in the Dutch Western Peatmeadows: a landscape just south of Amsterdam. From experimenting with new (& old) agricultural practices like herb-rich grasslands, swamp farming, extensive grazing, their farmers find ways to manage food production in harmony with nature. And for all their innovations, data is collected, analysed and measured to find out what works and what doesn't. Wij.land also acts as a trustworthy partner to bring farmers and government policymakers together to talk, and importantly, listen. They discuss how conflicting policies from various government agencies make life difficult for farmers and how policies can interact and actually empower farmers to do good. For me, Wij.land are a stand out example of an organisation that is innovating, experimenting and learning with farmers, while creating a safe space for difficult conversations. That is what it takes for an effective and sustainable food transition.

I appreciated the opportunity to join Andy Pharoah to see first hand the impact and potential of regenerative agriculture and our partnership with BIOSPHERES. As highlighted this week by Ottmar Edenhofer (chair of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change), meeting the EU’s 2040 climate goals won’t be possible unless we address agricultural emissions. Helping farmers make the transition to climate-smart agriculture is critical and will require significant public and private investment. #climateaction
