So proud of these 10 junior software engineers... ....who all started their first tech roles yesterday after excelling at our Bright Network Technology Academy. When we started Technology Academy, we had a vision for the future of UK tech. A belief that if we all work together we can transform the sector. And a drive to create opportunities for phenomenally talented individuals everywhere, no matter what their background is. This is what happens when all of that comes together. These 10 individuals have all been on different journeys and studied a range of degree subjects, but they all have one thing in common... A passion and drive to carve out a career in tech. It is that passion and drive that has seen them all take the leap and kickstart a career in tech and it will see them thrive in their new roles and beyond. It's move-in season! 🏡 📦 Let's take a moment for all of the hard work that Residential Life & Housing, Orientation, Maintenance, Public Safety, Dining and so many other teams put into making sure the first couple weeks of school are full of happy memories. ❤️ These teams really, really care about the safety and well-being of their on-campus communities. And it ain't easy: Excited students send lots of emails that can never get answered on time 💻 Worried parents make phone calls that send staff running in all directions 📞 Leadership wants a table set up here not there; language updates on communication that was supposed to roll out today ⏳ Rain, heat, traffic - all bad, all beyond their control 🛑 This time of year can be very stimulating for folks in higher education... 😅 Simply put, they're asked to do more with less every year! 🦝 Exciting News from the World of a Tech-Savvy Trash Panda! 🦝 As my journey through the professional wilderness reaches a pivotal moment, I’m both thrilled and humbled to share that the green banner of job-seeking has been retired. I've found my new den at Eastpointe Community Schools, joining the vibrant Technology Department! In this new adventure, I’ll dive nose-first into everything tech – from troubleshooting device dilemmas with parents and students at the help desk to weaving through the intricacies of networking, cloud storage, and web development across the district. My role also includes setting up cutting-edge technology in classrooms, and ensuring our future leaders have the tools to succeed. Though it's an entry-level position, it’s in the trenches where I flourish, sharpening my core skill set on the frontline before embarking on larger battles. Reflecting on the past 9 months without employment, it's been a challenging yet profoundly enlightening journey. The road was long, but the lessons learned and the resilience built along the way are invaluable. To those still navigating their professional forests, I extend my utmost support and encouragement. The path may seem daunting, but remember, every skilled trash panda was once just a novice rummaging through the bins of opportunity. This week marks 5 years of moving from Silicon Valley (SV) to the Research Triangle (RTP), and the Raleigh area. I frequently get asked, why did we move and how do I like this area? Especially by my friends in Silicon Valley. When you are in SV, you feel that you are living in a monoculture of tech folks. Almost everyone around you is working in tech or is an investor or a VC. It leads you to be hyper-competitive, and constantly chasing that next win, and that next role, and a higher paycheck. You need that higher paycheck to live and work in SV. And there is no other place like SV to fuel new companies, and tech startups for sure. The housing costs are out of control, the traffic and competition for schools and resources. Much of this was a motivator for leaving. But there were also many things that drew us to Raleigh and that we are grateful for. Being closer to our children who are both on the east coast. A lower cost of living, a simpler and calmer life and a diverse culture of real world humans. There are great schools here Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University as well as multiple other community colleges. A vibrant art and restaurant scene with world class museums like the North Carolina Museum of Art. There is a vibrant tech community as well and a world-class open source conference called All Things Open Conference run by the amazing Todd Lewis. I am also able to travel from an airport 15 mins from my home, and fully participate in my tech career but come home to a calm existence. Nothing wrong with that. #grateful #NorthCarolina #SiliconValley
