Brevity may not shine in this post, but the experience certainly did! Recently, I had the fabulous opportunity to represent the GIRLS mentorship program at the Chicago Women in Philanthropy's (CWIP) annual luncheon, where I spoke alongside a phenomenal young lady. Capturing the attention of 550ish women dedicated to tackling some of the world's greatest issues was an honor. The event was a wild success, and I want to commend the committee that made this happen. Many of us know how to rock many hats, especially in this sector. Executing an event of this size, at this level, on a volunteer basis is no small feat. Congratulations to these highly dedicated women on your success. Joining the GIRLS committee in 2021 and helping to build this mentorship program brings immense joy. Pouring into the next generation, as I see it, is an act of love and, in many ways, an act of protest. There is power in community, learning from one another, upskilling, and cultivating new norms like empathetic leadership. My mentee, we'll call her C, is extraordinary. She has a fire in her that's representative of so much more. Instinctually, I want to fiercely protect that light while building more stages for her to shine. Realistically, she needs the space and nourishment to let her wildfire roots spread. She embodies the unmatched potential within all young girls when given the room to discover and bloom. While progress moves slowly, organizations like CWIP give us something tangible to tap into and reinforce a sense of connectedness. Strengthening how we see each other, help each other, and interact with one another remains crucial. We need more acts of service in today's world. Inspiring others to volunteer, educate, and get more involved remains a form of impact that can't be overlooked. As I've grown and continue to evolve, I put much thought into how I want to spend my time. To me, it's as much about setting examples for the next generation/s as it is about energizing the adults around me. C exists as an imprinted example of our innate human ability to connect authentically and draw countless parallels despite divergent experiences. She reinforces why we must walk the walk, in addition to any megaphone we may hold. One hand forward, one hand back; fingers entwined. Imagine the impact we'll create. 💌
