If any one has spent any time time in India, they would know that getting around and finding accurate directions can some times be a big task. It can be time consuming. Even with digital maps, there are new roads, new layouts, new localities, road-name changes, diversions, road infrastructure hazards to tackle. Mapping is not just #software based. It requires covering thousands and millions of miles (or kilometers if you prefer) of road with significant camera and media technology and fact-checking and internet/processing speed. It's not cheap and it's a major industry even if we only know one of one or two players publicly. Starting August 1, 2024, Google will reduce the pricing of its Maps platform for developers in India. The company plans to cut costs for its core services by up to 70% and will begin accepting payments in Indian Rupees (INR). Additionally, Google will offer a 90% discount to developers collaborating with the Indian government-backed ONDC. This move follows criticism from Ola Cabs' CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, who condemned Google's pricing policies and switched to Ola's own in-house mapping service, saving Rs 100 crore.
