Went to the Low Carbon Concrete presentation by Concrete NZ. Very informative and well presented. My key takeaways: - Low carbon concrete (improvement over the ISC baseline) sometimes can be obtained without paying a premium (around 20% under the ISC baseline) - Standard price premium for low carbon concrete can be within 5-10% - Specification of low carbon concrete is generally straightforward. - Specify overall carbon reduction target instead of being too specific. Be flexible so the concrete supplier can achieve the carbon target with what's available for them. - Generally you don't get more shrinkage with SCM concrete. Auxetic materials An intriguing class of materials characterized by their negative Poisson's ratio, meaning they expand laterally when stretched and contract laterally when compressed. This behavior is the opposite of what is observed in most conventional materials, which have a positive Poisson's ratio and thus become thinner when stretched and thicker when compressed. Auxetic concrete is an innovative material that integrates auxetic structures or properties into conventional concrete to enhance its mechanical performance. This type of concrete exhibits a negative Poisson's ratio, allowing it to expand laterally when stretched and contract laterally when compressed, which is contrary to the behavior of traditional concrete.
