My friend asked me what kind of health insurance she should get. She sent me her options, I researched them and made this graphic, and we discussed it on her lunch break. I started by asking her questions about her current and expected use. She could get only the basics—annual and emergency. But if she wanted to splash out and get everything checked, she had great options to do so (0% coinsurance !!) After that, I explained some terms such the HSA. I could’ve said, “It lowers your taxable income” but as I’ve learned in The Externship, I needed to translate it to the client’s everyday life. So instead, I said, “You’ll get an 11% discount on seeing your psychiatrist by contributing to your HSA first and then paying for the visits” and I could hear her perking up with excitement (Everyone loves a discount). Both events are true but one translates to her lived experience. By the end of our call, she revealed that her dad (a personal finance expert) already told her which plan to get. But she didn’t want to continue doing “whatever her dad said”; she wanted to learn how to make the decisions on her own. And thanks to our conversation, she is one step closer. With massive retirements on the horizon for the Canadian P&C insurance industry, one organization is taking a multi-faceted approach to address the ‘talent crisis.’ The McGannon Foundation is ‘laser-focused’ on promoting the risk management and insurance profession in Canada through unique and distinct scholarships and student involvement programs, board member Hobby Pardo tells Canadian Underwriter. With our powers combined... we can solve the talent gap! 💍 🌐 It really is such a complex issue, it can be hard to know where to begin. However, as we engage with talent and better understand their needs, potential areas of focus emerge. Groups like Gamma Iota Sigma are tackling one of those areas we need to work on - supporting students' interest in RMI careers.
