For the last 27 years, Korn Ferry and Fortune have partnered annually to identify the most admired companies in the world. It's a fascinating process, with survey responses from nearly 4,000 senior leaders at 600+ companies across 28 countries. From the article: "To determine the best-regarded companies, [we] asked executives, directors and industry analysts to rate enterprises on nine criteria, from investment value and quality of management and products to social responsibility and ability to attract talent." Survey questions include #ESG and #sustainability , and this year's emphasis was on #growth: which companies expect to see significant revenue growth in 2024? Great program at the annual conference of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) today. The theme ‘The confident board’ - in the current context of polycrisis and rising uncertainties (including with the upcoming US election) - was a great choice. Here are a few takeaways and insights: - It’s important to be confident about our ability to prepare (not predict) the future despite the anxiety... - Canada has enduring governance leadership and global investors have trust in our corporate leaders and institutions. It’s a competitive advantage! - We currently sit between 2 world orders : the one developed after the 2nd world war based on multilateral institutions and a future undefined one. We can play a leadership role in influencing and shaping the new world. - Canada is no longer a sanctuary. We must adopt a ‘wartime mindset’ and consider our national security, not only our prosperity. - Scenario planning is more than ever relevant for boards in order to prepare for different outcomes in this unpredictable world. Increased focus towards strategic thinking is key as it provides more value than mainly focusing on compliance. Strategic planning should be continuous given the world we live in. - AI will increase productivity. However, social inequalities are increasing and the digital/AI revolution is expected to create a period of instability for workforce. As in previous industrial revolutions, more jobs should be created at the end of this period but our demographic reality (lack of people resources) will be a challenge and will require leaders to find ways to build loyal workforce and to use digital resources to support employees in their job. - Boards and corporations should look at AI as a technology that can help address business problems, not as a separate project. Companies should start small, gradually adopt AI in all key projects and take advantage of the AI talent in Canada. It’s a journey of learning! (Kudos Nicole Janssen for your insightful remarks on this topic) - Organizational culture is the rocket fuel of shareholder value. Boards should express their expectations on culture and behaviours while ensuring alignment of culture and compensation. - Boards’ focus must move from shareholders to stakeholders (employees, customers, etc.). There are key synergies generated in creating benefits for stakeholders. For example, research shows that employee engagement drives financial performance. Increasing ESG disclosure requirements (with ISSB standards) are not only addressing the needs for investors to assess risks, it’s also addressing rising expectations from stakeholders and increasing resilience. Thank you to the organizers, moderators and speakers! Rahul K. Bhardwaj, LL.B, ICD.D Gigi Dawe, LL.M.
