Col. John Boyd, a former US Air Force pilot, is a man whom I've never met, but wish I had. Although for many he's simply "the OODA loop guy", there is so much more to his legacy that is well worth exploring, grappling with, and ultimately, applying. His extensive contribution to military and business strategy, aircraft design and philosophy will shape minds for many years to come. It's been a remarkable decade for myself as I've tried to learn as much about his work as possible. Herewith then a small selection of worthwhile resources about Col. Boyd for the uninitiated to learn more about this remarkable man: - Book: "Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War" by Robert Coram; - Book: "The Mind of War" by Grant Hammond; - Book: "Certain to win: the strategy of John Boyd applied to business" by Chet Richards; - Website & Blog: "Slightly East of New - something to do with orientation..." by Chet Richards (this site also includes a comprehensive digital repository of Col Boyd's writings); - Podcast: No Way Out" by Mark McGrath and Brian "Ponch" Rivera; - Substack: "The Whirl Of ReOrientation" by Mark McGrath; - Book: “Science, Strategy and War: The Strategic Theory of John Boyd” by Air Commodore Prof. Dr. Frans Osinga; - Book: “A New Conception of War: John Boyd, the U.S. Marines, and Maneuver Warfare” by Ian Brown. This is just the tip of a massive iceberg worthy of sinking the Titanic, again. (Thank you for posting this reminder, Mark!) "People, ideas, and hardware ... in that order." - Col. Teaching Leaders & Teams To Harness VUCA with John Boyd’s OODA Loop to Sharpen Their Competitive Edge | CLO @ AGLX | Leadership Advisory | Keynote Speaker | U.S. Marine | Co-Host of "No Way Out" Podcast | 🇺🇸🇵🇷
Birthdays are a cause for celebration. Especially this one! Today is John Boyd’s Birthday. He would have been 97. As we remember his life and honor his legacy, there’s a lot to celebrate! Boyd’s theories and concepts continue to be relevant in our VUCA world. The Aerial Attack Study. Energy-Maneuverability Theory. “Destruction and Creation.” “Patterns of Conflict.” “A Discourse on Winning and Losing.” “People, ideas, things, always in that order.” “To Be or To Do?” “Challenge all assumptions.” “There’s no way out.” OODA. The lessons are many and absolutely applicable in any domain. By learning, understanding and applying Boyd's ideas we gain a significant advantage. We differentiate our decision-making, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. This leads to the natural result of improved collaboration, creativity, cooperation and competition. That’s a massive advantage! On this January 23rd, we remember John Boyd for his inspiration and his enduring legacy. Happy Birthday John Boyd!

Venus Media CEO | Cultural visionary uplifting diversity in media | Womxn and multicultural advocate | Mom
This week - Venus Media turns 6 - the "Mother" of all numbers! And this has me doing quite a bit of reflection on what it takes to be an entrepreneur. As I think back on the ups and downs of starting a company, these are the top 6 lessons I've learned: 1. Ignorance is Bliss. If I'd known everything that it takes to start, build and run a company, I'm not sure I would have done it. Not knowing everything actually helped me push through at some of the toughest moments and find creative solutions to challenges along the way. 2. Reputation is everything. Do what you say you're doing to do. Show up, follow up and do good work. When you do, your clients and partners will remember it and they will recommend and refer you to others. 3. The business is only as strong as your weakest team member. Hire people that are smarter than you, set-aside your ego and be open to feedback from within your team. This is the foundation for growth. 4. Culture WINS even when there are setbacks. Treat your team with love and respect and find fun ways to celebrate the wins. This makes the losses easier to digest. 5. When all else fails, hard work and showing up every day will payoff. "Days off" don't exist as a founder. So when times are slow the best thing to do is to get up and get to work. Activity breeds activity and doing this consistently will ensure success down the road. 6. Mental and Physical health are everything. Working out, keeping a routine and eating and sleeping well are all a HUGE part of being a successful entrepreneur. If you're not well, your business will suffer - so make sure you take care of YOU first and foremost. #entrepreneurship #femalefounder #anniversary #mediaagency #leadership #team
🎉 It’s our 6th birthday, and we couldn’t be more excited! 🎂 In numerology, the number six is connected to Venus and is often seen as the “Mother” of all numbers. It symbolizes unity and connection—qualities we strive to embody every day. So, here’s to an amazing sixth anniversary! 🍾 A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us—friends, family, colleagues, and partners. We’ve achieved so much in the past 6 years, but this is just the beginning… #VenusMedia #MarketingAgency #Anniversary #SmallBusiness #Celebration

Embracing a Healthier You in 2024 Prioritizing Physical and Mental Well-Being As we step into the promising realm of 2024, it's time to set goals that truly resonate with our well-being. Amidst the hustle and bustle of professional and personal life, it's crucial to make self-care a non-negotiable priority. This new year, let's embark on a journey to nurture both our physical and mental health. 1. Establishing Mindful Habits In a world that moves at an ever-increasing pace, mindfulness becomes our anchor. Consider incorporating simple yet effective practices like meditation or deep breathing exercises into your daily routine. These moments of stillness can significantly contribute to reducing stress, enhancing focus, and fostering a positive mindset. 2. Nourishing Your Body from Within A healthy mind resides in a healthy body. Explore and adopt a nutrition plan that aligns with your individual needs and preferences. This isn't about strict diets; it's about cultivating a sustainable, balanced approach to eating. Hydration is equally vital. 3. Prioritizing Regular Physical Activity Exercise isn't just about sculpting the body; it's a powerful tool for mental well-being. Find an activity that brings you joy, whether it's yoga, running, or a group exercise class. Regular physical activity not only boosts your mood by releasing endorphins but also contributes to improved overall health. 4. Setting Boundaries for a Healthy Work-Life Integration In our dynamic work environments, setting boundaries is often overlooked. Make a commitment to delineate work and personal time. This could mean logging off at a specific hour, designating tech-free zones, or scheduling regular breaks to recharge. Striking a balance between work and personal life is vital for long-term well-being. 5. Cultivating Meaningful Connections Human connection is a fundamental aspect of our well-being. In 2024, let's prioritize fostering and maintaining meaningful relationships. Whether it's spending quality time with loved ones, connecting with colleagues beyond work tasks, or joining communities that share your interests, building strong connections contributes to a robust support system. 6. Seeking Professional Support When Needed Acknowledging that it's okay to ask for help is a strength, not a weakness. If you find yourself struggling, consider reaching out to mental health professionals. Seeking support is a proactive step towards nurturing your mental health. Let's embrace the opportunity to invest in ourselves. Prioritizing both physical and mental health isn't just a resolution; it's a commitment to living a fulfilling and balanced life. 🎇#NewYearNewYou #WellBeing2024 #HealthGoals #WorkplaceWellness Find out more about Virgin Active South Africa's Workplace Wellness Programmes and Offers email: [email protected] Marise Collins Therina Labuschagne Musa Mahlasela Jason Grippa Prince Ncube Camilla Bergman
