Rise in long-term work sickness to cost UK £18bn in lost taxes The rise in long-term work sickness is projected to cost the UK over £18bn in lost taxes, according to analysis by the Liberal Democrats. Since 2019, there has been a 700,000 increase in individuals off work due to ill health, with 6.3m people still awaiting treatment on NHS waiting lists. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that each person off work long-term results in an average of £5,200 in lost tax revenue. If this trend continues, it could lead to a loss of £3.7bn in tax revenue per year or £18.3bn over the next parliament. Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, blamed the Conservative government for the state of the economy and the struggling healthcare system. 

The road to the election: from ‘what’ to ‘how’ With Labour formally requesting access talks with officials, we are moving towards a point in the electoral cycle where ‘how’ matters as much as ‘what’ in terms of policy. One of the standout Labour ideas is a mission delivery board at the heart of government to tackle poor health bringing together every department with an influence over the social determinants of health. This is not a new concept. Indeed following the abolition of Public Health England, the current government established the Health Promotion Taskforce – a Cabinet Committee to drive cross-government action on health and wellbeing. To my knowledge it met only once before being disbanded. The notion that health is about more than hospitals (fundamental though they are) is not yet a given. The challenge for the next government is to show how Whitehall can be rewired, how the resources we hold in common can be directed to a defining purpose: making us all healthier. There are three important stages i) winning and maintaining a clear mandate for this mindset (in the country, in Westminster and in Whitehall) ii) developing an implementation framework, including a Ministerial forum with the necessary powers and links to key partners at all levels and iii) sticking the course and sustaining this consensus by achieving tangible progress. This agenda is both radical and realistic, it is one that any aspiring party of government can run with.

The Spring Budget’s key messages were around lowering taxes, increasing productivity and making work pay to grow the economy.
