The demand for degrees for even entry-level positions or the preferential treatment of those with familial ties perpetuates a cycle of exclusion. Reflect on your own journey—someone took a chance on you. Why, then, is it arduous for us as humans to extend a helping hand to others? Embracing a transformative ethos, let us break free from these restrictive behaviors. Take risks on individuals driven by potential, not just pedigree. What do you know? Take a moment to consider what you well and truly know and understand. We’ve all heard “If you can’t explain it to a five year old, you don’t truly understand it yourself.” Trust me, some five year olds have life more figured out than some of us. Do I know and understand the work that I do? The mission I support? The impact, the risks, the rewards? Deeper yet, do I understand those things in my own home, community, or in society as a whole? One pebble dropped in a lake causes ripples that impact a surface area hundreds of times broader than the place the pebble struck. The effects of our actions (or inactions) extend far beyond just ourselves, and that’s something society has lost sight of. Every chance you have to make a positive impact, take it. That’s your opportunity to own and it may only come around once. We might not be able to change the world as a whole, but each of us has the ability to change OUR world.
