🏢 Does what we build reflect who we are? Over the centuries, architecture has been an inseparable expression of contemporary art. Through antique statues and columns, through fanciful Art Nouveau, to elegant modernism, the artists reflected the atmosphere and problems of the times. 👋 And how is it now? It is said that the current architecture unfortunately reflects an expression of capitalism. Many buildings have a very similar shape, they are not tailor-made, they are built simply for rent and for money. 🌱 Fortunately, there are more and more voices of criticism towards such projects. It is said that cities need diversity and to be more user-friendly. Let's hope that soon the way modern buildings are perceived and designed will really change, which will have a positive impact on the sustainable development of our cities. #city #buildings #architecture

Mr. Rohn Architecture serves as an enduring element within the complex tapestry of human existence, seamlessly interwoven into the fabric of our beings. Every structure, from picturesque cottages to towering skyscrapers, not only imparts a narrative but, arguably more significantly, influences the storylines of those who reside within them. Prioritise the symbiotic connection between human beings and structures. Just as our hands and minds influence the physical environment, so too do our creations shape us. Our carefully constructed and planned environments serve as the backdrop for both our successes and challenges, our happiness and sadness. Nevertheless, this connection surpasses physical proximity. It explores fundamental aspects of the human condition. We determine our own destinies; we are not merely inhabitants of outer space. The structures we build serve as reflections of our hopes, ambitions, and fantasies, revealing the depths of our ingenuity and the heights of our striving. However, in spite of the magnificence of iron and stone, we must not overlook the intrinsic susceptibility of our collective human race. Humans depend on the shelter and sanctuary that structures provide in the same way that they require human engagement to come to life. Within this intricate interplay between the creator and the created, the occupant and the space, we are inextricably intertwined, with each element mutually enhancing the other in observable and imperceptible ways. Consequently, let us value this intense interdependence, acknowledging the profound influence it exerts on our shared awareness while appreciating the aesthetic appeal of our constructed surroundings. Ultimately, our humanity, not their appearance, determines the significance of the structures we construct. Early #Modernism is filled with radical ideas about architecture, living, and industrial materials--often these are combined in a way that anticipates our contemporary focus on embedding #sustainable principles in architecture. Architect Albert Frey's design, working for A. Lawrence Kocher, of the 1931 #AluminaireHouse is such an anticipatory project. I wrote a review of the house and accompanying retrospective of Frey at the #PalmSpringsArtMuseum for #ArchitecturalRecord's May print issue (and it's online now, linked below). Although Frey did not design it according to #circulareconomy thinking, it effectively is a circular house--the original materials and systems have been taken apart and reconstructed at least four times. When someone says you cannot do something--like design a house using #circularity--tell them someone did it in 1931, so what's the big deal? #NotSoMuch

Mass timber is a new take on an age-old building material. The construction system, based on engineered wood components that are stronger and more fire-resistive than dimensional lumber, has been gaining momentum over the last 15 years as an alternative to concrete or steel, in no small part due to its carbon-storing potential. Now, Tall Timber: The Future of Cities in Wood, an exhibition at New York’s Skyscraper Museum, documents the material’s rise and its promise. The exhibition grew out of the similarly named Reframed: The Future of Cities in Wood, mounted at the Chicago Architecture Center last year. But Carol Willis, the Lower Manhattan museum’s director, says the focus of Tall Timber is more urban than the earlier exhibition. “Our agenda was exploring the application of mass timber, which is so much better for the environment [than steel or concrete], at density and at scale.” https://lnkd.in/dwDzBY8v

Architecture transcends time, but sadly, architectural elements often do not. The challenge, then, is in the choice to repair; replace; or destroy and start over. It’s best to preserve, but matching existing historical elements can be cost prohibitive. Fortunately, there are ways to create new profiles that are unique and cost-effective.
