🔥 The space debris topic is HOT 🔥 Space debris and its mitigation are an omnipresent topic on this year's space conferences all over the world. In February, the first Space Debris Conference took place in Saudi Arabia. The ASCEND conference in Las Vegas, which runs the next few days, discusses space sustainability: "We have landfills in space, but we don’t have to". That’s why we’re pleased to see that, this week, the UK Government has published the Space Industrial Plan - from ambition to action – advancing UK Space Industry, a joint civil-defence plan that sets out to modernise the relationship between government and the commercial space sector, establishing clear visions, missions, and actions to unlock growth and develop resilient space capabilities. The Plan sets out five specific capability goals to direct resources and efforts to these areas of strategic importance and expected industry focus: 🌌 Space Domain Awareness (SDA) 🌌 In-orbit servicing, assembly & manufacturing 🌌 Space data for earth applications 🌌 Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) 🌌 Satellite communication technology This plan will focus on where we want to achieve UK leadership in specific capabilities and indicate where government expects a focus of resources across the space industry, and how we intend to change the way we work with the space industry to achieve a shared vision. “The way China has clinically studied us and our dependence on space…and now are rapidly building systems to hold that architecture at risk,” he said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. What was it made for? Whiting talked about a “vulnerability window” for America’s space assets, many of which were built for a benign environment. But that’s not the case anymore: China and Russia have counterspace capabilities designed to target US assets—especially secure communications, PNT, and missile warning. Until the military has finished hardening those targets to protect them from attacks, there is a window in which an adversary could successfully target them. Whiting also predicted Russia’s significant ground losses in Ukraine could force the nation to target assets in orbit to gain an advantage on Earth. “Their losses in the Ukraine conflict will take years to rebuild in terms of terrestrial offensive capabilities, which will likely encourage Russia to become more reliant on nuclear, cyber, and space capabilities,” he wrote in prepared testimony”.

"Session 2: Space Sustainability – Binding Regulation -v-The Space Race." "The space economy is evolving like never before. An unprecedented amount of public and private investment is going into new constellations leading to a renewed space race, and, causing concern for governments the world over about the sustainability of space for future generations. The boom in satellites being launched into space was arguably foreseeable a decade ago. This led to the adoption of the Long-Term Sustainability Guidelines by the UN in 2019. Yet the world remains far from agreeing on a binding set of norms and regulations that are vitally needed if the risks resulting from congestion in space are truly to be mitigated. Voluntary initiatives such as Charters and Sustainability Ratings continue to emerge but risk falling short of making a tangible difference. The European Union however is pioneering an approach that could put Europe at the forefront of binding regulation. The proposed EU Space Law (EUSL) is set to provide potentially binding measures (rules) and non-binding measures (labels) for the development of sustainable activities in space."...
