Howden has announced its entry into the Japanese market for the first time, launching Howden Re Japan and an ILS partnership with Keystone ILS Capital. Howden has also announced the appointment of Kentaro Tada as CEO of Howden Japan. Howden Re Japan will provide reinsurance brokerage services to life and non-life companies as well as strategic advice leveraging data, analytics, and capital markets expertise in the Japanese market. Kentaro Tada (pictured) commented: “This is the first step on a journey to establish Howden’s long-term presence in Japan. As a company, Howden is dedicated to improving disaster resilience and corporate sustainability, and Japan, as a country that faces significant risks from large-scale natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons, can benefit greatly from the specialist global expertise we bring." This is what a duopoly does. Essentially two airlines dominate the market and they know it. Recently they (being the duopoly at power) influenced the push back of more flights from Qatar and Emirates who wanted more flight spots. Turkish airlines I believe will be coming in later this year with flights from AUS. On paper the low cost Bonza must have made sense and let's face it there's a market for people wanting to travel for less. Otherwise, Bonza would never have entered the market. However, in practice it's the dynamics of the duopoly that crush the new entrant. Oligopolies, and worse duopolies, and worst of all monopolies, come at a very high cost to society, even though they are goldmines for the owners of those monopolies/oligopolies. I wonder how this applies to the FinTech space in financial services? Competition is the backbone of an efficient economy.
