Another carbon capture application onboard ships!

The first day of the inaugural NYC OceanTech Summit was a great success, thanks to the efforts of Jake Russell from Propeller, Will Lutz and Delaney Demark. Innovator's Day featured inspiring new ventures and research in sectors such as shipping, like: Newlight's hydrogen injection retrofit for marine vessel engines, CoFlowJetLift's cylindrical sail solution and Oxylus Energy's green methanol production system. Maine's Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences shared a promising approach that deploys microbes to capture mineralized phosphates from sources such as wastewater, and then in turn provide captured phosphates critical for fertilizers. Who knew we were approaching Peak Phosphate production? Several pitches focused on opportunities in treating hypersalty brine that is a problematic leftover of desalinatization processes. Other notable startups included the #microplastics filtering system from PolyGone, and Sinkco Labs working on biomemetic approaches to carbon sequestration. Many thanks also to the other pitch judges Susan Schofer from SOSV and HAX and Andrew Chang with Activate. Our goal in attending is to extend this #bluetech ecosystem-building effort in NYC to NJ, especially as the region continues to grow in areas including innovative #aquaculture, #offshore wind and all facets of a sustainable blue economy.

Our corporate venture lab, lomarlabs, has announced the successful completion of sea trials of a #carboncapture system on board a #Lomar vessel, with the Seabound technology capturing roughly one tonne of CO₂ per day. The pilot project used a prototype system to demonstrate the system’s feasibility to reduce CO₂ emissions and catalyse a new, cost-effective technology for the shipping and wider maritime industry. It also proved the system can double up as a SOx scrubber, thus achieving two objectives with a single device and crucially this is done using entirely recyclable and safe consumables. lomarlabs began collaborating with the climate tech start-up last April and used the Lomar #containership SOUNION TRADER as a floating lab to test the technology, which was retrofitted into the ship’s engine exhaust funnel. This collaborative pilot proved that Seabound’s unique compact system, which uses a second-generation carbon capture technology called calcium looping, could efficiently turn CO₂ emissions into solid calcium carbonate pebbles. The limestone pebbles are safe, inert and non-toxic, and can be easily stored on board before being offloaded in port for sale in pure form or turned back into quicklime and CO₂, for the quicklime to be reused onboard another vessel and the CO₂ sold for utilisation or sequestration. This highlights the innovative and environmentally conscious approach Seabound is bringing to carbon capture in the maritime industry. Overall, the test successfully captured roughly 1 tonne of CO₂ per day in the prototype system, demonstrating the viability of this novel Seabound technology, while also laying the foundation for full-scale installations in the future. Lomar CEO, Nicholas Georgiou, says: “We are at a crucial turning point for ensuring an environmentally conscious future, mitigating carbon emissions and developing clean fuel solutions for our maritime industry. This successful sea trial represents a pivotal moment for Seabound, Lomar, and lomarlabs, together with the broader maritime industry. We are proud to have collaborated with Seabound to pioneer this sustainable solution in our efforts to support maritime innovation and cleaner, safer oceans.”

High-Tech or Low-Tech for Sustainability: Must We Choose? As an engineer at heart, I naturally lean towards high-tech concepts, such as nuclear fusion, novel materials, AI, and so on. However, my exploration into water management in permaculture has revealed a world of low-tech innovations. Take, for example, the use of swales to "slow, spread, sink and store" water, or the creation of ponds to hold water that the soil cannot absorb. Have you ever thought about spending your vacation moving rocks and digging dirt? That was precisely how I spent my time in Cerveteri, Italy, last summer, combining the theory and practice of permaculture in an intensive week-long course. The image below displays an artificial pond we dug during the class. Its mission? To capture and store excess water from a network of swales. By December, just three months later, the pond was holding water, encircled by a lush green carpet. So, should we opt for high-tech or low-tech for sustainability? I propose, why not both? Before diving into high-tech solutions, let's first explore the simpler, more resource-friendly low-tech options. If these aren't sufficient, then we can turn our focus to the high-tech route. #climatechange #permaculture #lowtech
