✅$5,000,000. No strings attached. MacKenzie Scott’s donation to The Knowledge House reinforces a growth pathway for the next 5 years. This is a testament to impactful staff members, past and present. It’s also an affirmation of solid leadership. The confidence I have in Jerelyn Rodriguez & its leadership team in executing that new growth plan is the same confidence I had back in 2013 when she pulled me in to help plan out her 8 year vision for TKH; the same confidence I had in her when she convinced me to serve in a larger capacity starting in 2017 and ultimately build out its career team and processes. And this donation doesn’t happen without the commitment of current and former students. I’ve seen approximately 2000 of TKH students, from age 16 to 77, either as their career instructor, head of the career success team, or both. Their persistence, their willingness to refer others, their desires to contribute to TKH even after they have secured life-changing career & college opportunities are why people continue to give in time, talent, and treasure. ✅ Sure there’s too many to list, but I want the following folks and their cohort classmates to know they’re not forgotten: I still think about the fun times pre-2020 with folks like Jennifer Paulino, Augusto Proano, and Iván Felix… There’s my former students turned staff who I see weekly like Remzi Gjikokaj, Jahaziel Israel, CSM, Josue Ramirez-Romero… The Innovation Fellow alums like Janet Perez, ESDRAS DIEGUEZ… And there’s KKCF HS program alums like Maisha Chowdhury, Kavey Zheng, Elliot Babilonia, Shahida C. We rarely recognise the long-term impact of our contributions. 🛣️ For example, joining a board can sometimes be daunting, especially for sectors challenged by broader economic pressures. Yet, it's precisely in these moments that transformative leadership can shine the brightest. Even if it takes a while to get through headwinds along the way. During my time as Trustee for a hard-working Autism Charity, we navigated through VERY tough times to achieve the remarkable turnaround now underway. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration (and determination)! In those moments, we rarely know the impact of our individual contributions, which is where feedback can be helpful.🗣️ Just days ago, I stepped down after two transformative years - for personal reasons. Satisfied that our financial and strategic turnaround - newly boosted by additional trustees to steer the Charity's strategic vision - was well underway, with green shoots! 🌱 This testimonial from the Board Chair, about my contribution was an unexpected surprise: " Bella joined the board at a critical time for the charity with mounting financial losses and the departure of senior staff and some trustees. Bella was one of a small number of trustees who stuck with it and set the course for the charity’s financial recovery and ultimately established a revised strategy for stability and growth. She also played an important role in the selection of a new CEO. #Leadership transitions are necessary moments in the lifetime of movement and #nonprofit organizations, but they can often destabilize these organizations. Instead of stepping in and offering support, #funders often sit back and wait to see how the transition unfolds. This practice can leave nonprofit leaders, especially Black and Indigenous leaders and leaders of color, to navigate the uncertainty of the transition on their own. But funders can use these moments as opportunities for collaboration, active listening, and true partnership, so that nonprofit organizations are set up for success before, during, and after a leadership transition.
