We join many in our community who are celebrating Pride this weekend 🏳️🌈 In honour of #PrideMonth, we’re resharing a uniquely SickKids love story. When it comes to love, sometimes you’re caught by surprise. That was certainly the case for Taylor and Nicole Johnston, who met working as Respiratory Therapists in the ICU at SickKids and quickly became best friends. It wasn’t until a couple years later their friendship evolved into more that they decided to take a leap and see what could happen. Turns out, magic happened. Nicole and Taylor got married in September 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic) with only 10 guests in attendance and Sherri, an Administrative Coordinator in the Neonatology and Respiratory Therapy Department, officiating the ceremony. Now many years, two cats, and a baby later, the couple says it seems like they were fighting fate all along. “In hindsight, when we were friends, we’d always talk about where we would live and work in the future to be close to each other — in some capacity, we always planned to be together forever,” says Nicole. Kangaroo Care Day (May 15):The theme for Kangaroo Care Day 2024, "Embrace the Magic", has been chosen to underscore the profound and transformative nature of skin-to-skin contact between parents and infants. This theme encourages a deeper appreciation for the emotional and physiological benefits inherent in the practice of Kangaroo Care. By employing the term "magic", the intention is to evoke a sense of wonder and enchantment associated with the positive outcomes that result from this nurturing interaction. It serves as a reminder to healthcare professionals, caregivers, and the broader community to approach Kangaroo Care with a heightened awareness of its intrinsic value and the remarkable impact it has on the well-being of newborns and premature infants. Embracing the magic of Kangaroo Care fosters a commitment to recognizing and prioritizing this invaluable practice within the realm of neonatal care.

As a proud MK resident and someone who has spent a decent amount of time in its various baby-related wards over the last few months, I can confirm it's certainly in need of expansion. Some parents are travelling extensively back and forth due to limited space, and wards have been described as cramped and dated. Some families are even being sent to hospitals in other counties to give birth safely. The new women's and children's hospital planned for MK will increase capacity, but I've lived here for 24 years now and the cry out for expansion has gone well beyond that. Healthcare-specific modular structures are a great way to quickly increase that capacity. We saw during Covid how quickly these sorts of units can be put together to increase capacity, so the expansion of their use could be crucial whilst long-term projects face delays caused by government changes and legislative hold-ups. https://lnkd.in/eSR5wpg6

Helping families in South & Central London to achieve their breastfeeding goals with bespoke face-to-face support. Home visits available including evenings and weekends.
UPDATE: My local NHS tongue tie clinic, Kings, have changed their aftercare policy. In lactation we are always learning & adapting, adjusting our practice as new evidence comes to light. Kings was always unusual in advising a programme of "Disruptive wound massage" as a method to avoid reattachment and to promote scar tissue healing as far back as possible. Kings say: Since January 2024, we have changed part of the after- care advice: we are no longer advocating for a disruptive wound massage, but we have decided to support babies into learning new skills, by encouraging parents to perform simple suck training exercises, gently feel under the baby’s tongue for a few seconds, and most importantly, to respect the baby’s cues and stop touching the baby’s mouth when they cry. We have been sharing helpful videos with the parents for the past 2 years, and we are also making sure that all the members of the team clearly explain those exercises during the assessment. A new information leaflet is underway, and it will also contain the links to said videos, so that the parents become familiar with the optional active wound management suggestions prior to coming to us: https://buff.ly/48UnDBx https://buff.ly/48SDP66 2 For older babies: https://buff.ly/3Unk95S https://buff.ly/49h4rxA #tonguetie #tonguefunctionmatters #frenulotomy #oralfunction #lactation #breastfeedingsupport
