Can you imagine having to choose between a home and your beloved pet? This is the heartbreaking reality for many Canadians. Over 60% of households in Canada have cats or dogs, and more than 70% see them as family members. Sadly, the shortage of pet-friendly housing in our country is a major problem, making many families choose between a home and keeping their companion animals. Many shelters are at capacity, dealing with an influx of surrenders from families facing this reality. From August to September 10, our goal is to raise $10,000 through our Tails of Summer Challenge. First of all, I am a dog lover. we have a Yorkie named Scooter We have a cat named Ambush, that took up with us when he was dumped. The somewhat staged ads that the ASPCA runs are very expensive and really tug at your heart. That's the point. So I did a little research on them and was appalled to find out that about 42 cents of every dollar goes to Executive salaries, administrative costs, and ads. The CEO makes over A million dollars annually and other executives are over $200K annually. Even the basic caregivers make more than many teachers and policemen.These figures are in the public domain and if they are inaccurate, please make corrections This is way out of line from most charitable organizations which are closer to 20 cents out of each dollar or less. Tunnels to towers only spends about 5 cents on the dollar on salaries and administration. Meanwhile, most local animal shelters are underfunded and not supported by the ASPCA My point is this. Adopt your pets from local animal shelters and donate there. Many employees or volunteers are barely compensated for their time and serve out of the goodness of their hearts.

URGENT - On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Parachutes for Pets was activated as emergency support for those fleeing the Fort McMurray wildfires with pets. Although most evacuees were headed to the Edmonton area, nonprofits are struggling across Alberta and the pet resources are extremely limited. Within 24 hours Parachutes for Pets had sent multiple loads of pet supplies, and emergency pet packs to Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton, and Lac La Biche. They had also arranged for over 40 pets in the Edmonton area to have safekeeping and six to receive vet care for wildfire related medical concerns.  Their team has also seen 8 pets arrive to Calgary with their families. They currently have 4 of them in their safekeeping program, and the rest have popped into Parachutes to get the essential supplies they had to leave behind. At a time when their regular need for services has increased, and the prediction of a long, dry summer ahead - they need to humbly ask for support to ensure our efforts can continue.  Can you help? Today is International Guide Dog Day - celebrating the important role Guide Dogs play in supporting people all around the world. We proudly partner with Guide Dogs Australia as our charity partner for Dialogue in the Dark programs and have seen first-hand the vital role Guide Dog services play in empowering individuals who are blind or have low vision to lead independent lives. The theme this year urges us all to learn the laws about Guide Dogs access – “Wherever you can go, Guide Dogs can go too”. Access issues consistently get in the way of Guide Dogs Handlers being able to get to where they need to go, with almost every second journey for Guide Dog Handlers resulting in a refusal from a taxi or rideshare, even though it’s the law to let Guide Dogs travel. "Great job by the LEOs in EVERY aspect of the situation!! All the drama about the dog… As the daughter of an LEO raised with K9s and German shepherds, they were absolutely correct to be cautious and wonder about the dog’s behavior regardless of the current wagging tail. Personal experience: as a child my parents let me keep one of the German shepherds that was too old to start with the dept. We were incredibly bonded. Our driveway was huge and there were stairs leading to the porch. My dog was 100% friendly in the driveway. Tail wagging, licking, happy for pets. But the moment anyone attempted to cross that first step without my parents escorting them, she would and had on 2 occasions bit someone. She did not attack them. She bit them to say, “this is my turf and my child is here. You don’t have permission from my owners. You can’t come closer” This is what happens when they go into protection mode. They can be the sweetest happiest tail wagging pup but the moment you cross that boundary, their job is to protect their family. Maybe the word choice could have been different. Honestly though, they were concentrated on saving a child’s life. Not being politically correct in their word choice for possible dog behavioral changes. They did an amazing job and everyone is safe! That’s what matters! 🖤💙🖤 (Note: she was not put down nor deemed vicious. The 2 people who were bit were fully aware that they crossed her boundary and she was warning them. Humans have trouble respecting theirs and others boundaries. Let alone remembering animals have them too.)"
