The rise of AI and remote work offers flexibility but can also lead to increased feelings of loneliness among employees. New studies have shown that these feelings can have severe consequences, including higher rates of alcohol consumption and insomnia, and even increased mortality rates. To combat this, employers need to take proactive steps: 🔹 Boost overall employee engagement to reduce loneliness—engaged employees are 64% less likely to report feeling lonely. 🔹 Encourage personal connections between team members through apps like Donut, mentoring, and onboarding programs. 🔹 Host regular offsite events to foster trust and stronger connections among employees. 🔹 Promote a culture that values social interaction, even in remote settings. Additionally, using AI to enhance worker autonomy and provide meaningful tasks can significantly improve mental health. Implement these strategies to ensure a happier, healthier, and more connected workforce. Gen Z workers are coming up — the oldest are entering their late twenties and getting serious about their careers. So how best to support them? In my work talking to hiring managers, company leaders and job seekers, the topic of a shifting generational workforce has been on a lot of minds. A recent report from the mindfulness app Calm offers three ideas based on a comprehensive poll of 4,000+ working people in the US, UK, Germany and India. They are: Offering digital mental health tools — Naturally, Calm recommends Calm, but there are certainly countless others you could subsidize for employees Ensure they’re getting enough mentoring and training — This is a particular issue for remote workers Respect their values and priorities — Which tend to include environmental sustainability, accessibility and DEI efforts Putting these types of support mechanisms in place now will serve your HR department as #GenZ slowly takes over the workforce in the next few decades.

There’s been a huge shift in focus towards wellbeing since the pandemic and subsequent move to remote working, and what's interesting is that the response to this - and the rapid rise of AI - is a new appreciation of the importance of social relationships and human connection. Companies are just starting to realise that not only are these two things important for healthspan, they also improve stress resilience and sense of belonging to our fellow workers. And guess what? This has a direct impact on the bottom line. A study found that when salespeople were paired for lunch (not having known each other well previously), revenues improved. This is the impact of social relationships and human connection, and possibly, the next frontier of wellbeing. 2moI agree with the importance of engagement, mentoring and generally communicating a sense of contribution leading to fulfillment. But these negative feelings speak to someone who suffers from a lack of socialization skills outside of work. Remote or even better a hybrid situation frees up time for other pursuits including social interaction. Can’t get behind remote work being the culprit.
