In October, we would like to share our associates’ stories of how a breast cancer diagnosis has impacted their life. Our first story has been shared by Summer, an Assistant Store Manager.   The impact of a breast cancer diagnosis has been with Summer for almost her entire life.    Her first experience was at 10 years of age when her Grandmother was diagnosed. She remembers being completely overcome with fear at the mere mention of cancer and the treatment schedule and procedures endured left a lasting memory. Then 5 years later, when her grandmother’s health had improved, her fear was compounded when she was diagnosed again. However, little did Summer know that at age 19 she had also developed very aggressive stage 4 breast cancer. In the short span of 5 years, Summer had to endure aggressive treatment which resulted in 6 rounds of 3 different types of chemotherapy and a total of 15 surgeries. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis at 19 years of age is very rare in the United States, in fact the odds are only about 1 person out of every 1 million. The road to her diagnosis was not easy due to her age. In fact, she was told multiple times it had to be something else and was sent to specialist after specialist and was even denied a mammogram at one point.    What advice would Summer give? Unlike what she was led to believe by multiple people and specialists, you can get breast cancer very young and it can be very painful. She wants everyone to be proactive when it comes to your health. Speak up and ask questions! Prevention is key! Cancer does not discriminate against anything!  #breastcancer #cancer #shoesensation #shoes #retail
