Thank you, Dr. Rashed, for introducing this topic. Many of us might assume from the title that we can convert our waste into energy seamlessly. Unfortunately, this isn't entirely the case with waste-to-energy solutions. The efficiency of current technologies is around 15%, and the emissions are quite complex. The process releases various gases, contributing to pollution and potent atmospheric gases. Waste-to-energy is most effective when combined with efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Dr. Rashed's published materials are very informative and provide a deeper understanding of the pros and cons of the waste-to-energy process.

Dear Dr. Rashed Karkain only a few months ago I elaborated on the subject of #waste2energy and what's advisable to do. #waste2energy is a proven technology and can be considered safe and reliable. No need to argue that incineration has its place in the so-called #wastehierarchy. „Where further recycling is not practical or possible, energy or materials could be recovered from waste through processes such as anaerobic digestion or incineration“ However a so-called pre-treatment #MRF prior to feeding the boiler is required. State-of-the-art separation technologies allow to recover #recyclables from mixed waste input streams as well. There's numerous examples of such facilities in Europe in countries like i.e. the Netherlands, Spain, Germany. The additional cost would be some 12%- 15% in relation to the CAPEX of the waste incinerator plus flue gas cleaning. Hydro-hubs and desalination might solve Bangalore's water scarcity issue. Hydro-Hubs Concept: Imagine creating localized “Hydro-Hubs” within the city. These hubs would serve as integrated water management centers. Each Hydro-Hub would combine various water sources, treatment facilities, and distribution networks. The goal is to decentralize water management, making it more efficient, sustainable, and resilient. Components of Hydro-Hubs: Rainwater Harvesting: Every building, park, and open space within the Hydro-Hub area would collect rainwater. Rooftops, roads, and green spaces would be designed to channel rainwater into storage tanks. Greywater Recycling: Buildings and communities would treat and reuse greywater (from sinks, showers, etc.) for non-potable purposes like irrigation or flushing toilets. Aquifer Recharge Wells: Hydro-Hubs would include recharge wells to replenish groundwater. Excess rainwater and treated wastewater would percolate into the aquifers. Desalination Units: For coastal cities like Chennai, integrating small-scale desalination plants within Hydro-Hubs could provide additional freshwater. Smart Metering and Monitoring: Real-time monitoring of water usage, leak detection, and predictive analytics would optimize distribution. Community Participation: Engage citizens in water stewardship. Schools, colleges, and community centers could educate people about water conservation. Encourage citizen-led initiatives like community gardens, where rainwater and greywater nourish plants. Green Infrastructure: Design Hydro-Hubs with green roofs, permeable pavements, and urban forests. These natural systems absorb rainwater, reduce runoff, and recharge aquifers. Construct wetlands and bio-swales to naturally filter and purify water. Incentivize Innovation: Offer grants and incentives for startups and researchers working on water-saving technologies. Collaborate with universities and research institutions to explore novel solutions. Public-Private Partnerships: Involve private companies in Hydro-Hub development. They can contribute expertise, funding, and technology. In return, companies gain a stake in sustainable water management. Policy and Regulation: Create a supportive policy framework. Streamline approvals for rainwater harvesting systems, greywater reuse, and aquifer recharge. Implement water pricing mechanisms that encourage conservation. Benefits of Hydro-Hubs: Resilience: Hydro-Hubs diversify water sources, reducing dependence on a single supply. Local Empowerment: Communities actively participate in water management. Climate Adaptation: Hydro-Hubs adapt to changing rainfall patterns and climate extremes.

🌍 Educational Field Visit to Kerawalapitiya Incineration Plant*🌍 As part of our Energy and waste management subject, my classmates and I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Kerawalapitiya Incineration Plant. This visit was an eye-opener, providing us with valuable insights into the intricacies of waste management and the critical role incineration plays in reducing landfill dependency. Upon arrival, we were introduced to the plant’s operations and its significance in the waste management landscape of Sri Lanka. The plant is equipped with advanced technology designed to efficiently manage waste, showcasing a practical solution to the growing waste disposal challenges. The incineration process not only reduces the volume of waste but also can be used to generate electricity(but here it's not in practice), contributing to the energy grid and promoting sustainable practices. Walking through the facility, we observed various stages of the incineration process. From waste collection and sorting to combustion and energy recovery, each step was meticulously designed to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact. The plant’s state-of-the-art emission control systems ensure that harmful pollutants are effectively filtered out, adhering to stringent environmental standards. One of the most striking aspects of the visit was witnessing the plant’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The integration of waste-to-energy technology not only addresses waste management issues but also provides a renewable energy source, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach to environmental conservation. The plant serves as a model for how engineering and environmental stewardship can work hand-in-hand to create sustainable solutions. This visit underscored the importance of advanced waste management techniques in achieving environmental sustainability. It also highlighted the need for continued investment in technology and infrastructure to manage waste effectively. Overall, the Kerawalapitiya Incineration Plant visit was an enriching experience that broadened our perspectives on waste management and sustainability. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI) for the privilege bestowed upon me to be part of the jury for the Water Awards for Cement Manufacturing Facilities during the 3rd QCFI National Sustainability Awards and Conference on Net Zero Vision for the Cement and Ready-Mix Concrete Industry held on January 29, 2024. Witnessing the dedication of industry leaders to sustainable practices was truly inspiring, and it reaffirmed my belief in the collective responsibility we share for environmental stewardship. I discovered the remarkable strides the cement manufacturing sector has taken in advancing water conservation initiatives. Innovations such as air-cooled condensers for thermal power generation, inventive cooling methods implemented in various sections including clinker cooler, coal mill area, and cement grinding units, as well as the adoption of dry fog dust collection systems instead of conventional water sprinklers, are emblematic of the industry's commitment to eco-friendly solutions. The increase in the use of renewable power has contributed significantly to a decrease in water consumption in captive power plants for cooling applications. The focus on treating sewage for greenbelt applications is a commendable practice, with opportunities identified for the recycling of treated sewage in various process applications within the plant. Technologies such as Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems hold immense potential in enhancing the utilization of treated sewage, especially in regions facing high climate water risk. The commitment to environmental standards is evident in the adoption of innovative IoT-based horticulture systems in cement plants. This ensures the prudent use of water for horticulture applications while meeting the greenbelt and plantation development requirements mandated by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC). The event highlighted the reliance on stormwater collected in mine pits as a major source of fresh water for cement plants. While this practice is commendable, a call to action emerges - a detailed evaluation of local watershed-related impacts becomes imperative. It is essential to understand the net available water for neighboring communities and farmers in high-water risk areas, as water is a shared natural resource and access to it is a fundamental right for the community. Moreover, acknowledging the potential impact of groundwater seepage into mine pits on local groundwater resources emphasizes the need for holistic water stewardship programs. These programs should extend beyond the immediate operational concerns to encompass the broader ecological and social context. Adopting a holistic water stewardship program not only aligns with environmental standards but also demonstrates a commitment to creating socially aligned, water-positive scenarios.  #waterconservation #waterstewardship
