I enjoyed taking a walk down memory lane when I was interviewed, along with Christopher Peabody, Michaela Kerrissey, and others for this podcast on Planet Money. It's about the intersections of technology adoption with performance improvement, organizational change and culture change in the context of a small pilot study we did several years ago (in pre-Covid times) to test a secure texting application. For the healthcare operations nerds out there, there is some significant detail missing in this telling- namely that this project was not just conducted pre-Covid but also initiated before our organization had implemented a unified EHR- a much higher priority for technological transformation and a baseline need for implementing an integrated text-based comms solution. And it was also a small test of change within a much larger, and multi-faceted clinical and operation improvement effort, which I am proud has had lasting, positive effects for patients, staff, and our organization. Nevertheless, the case study presents an interesting framework for assessing and planning to address 4 barriers to change in tech implementation (or another change initiative): Risk, Habit, Identity, and Power. Having the chance to reflect on this experience for the podcast was a great opportunity to reflect on all the great work I've had a privilege to be a part of in partnership with many dedicated people in the healthcare safety-net, and how even when there are set-backs or unexpected outcomes, the process of learning and improving is a long-game. https://lnkd.in/gUsX93Xi
