🌟 We're pleased to introduce our second Plenary Speaker, Brian Seger, for the upcoming 1st Electrochemical Conversion National Symposium (ECCNS).   🔬 Dive into the world of CO2 electrolysis devices with Brian! His talk will provide invaluable insights into the bottlenecks of CO2 electrolysis and strategies to overcome them. He will focus on their synchrotron based results using small angle and wide angle x-ray scattering as well as x-ray fluorescence to observe CO2 electrolysis devices in real time while concomitantly measuring anode and cathode product distributions. During higher current density (>100 mA/cm2) CO2 electrolysis devices are prone to cathodic ‘flooding’ leading to greatly enhanced hydrogen production. Via their various in-situ analysis tools, he can explain the basis for this flooding, which is primarily due to salt deposition.   👨🔬 Brian Seger earned his B.Sc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo before completing his Ph.D. under the guidance of Prashant Kamat at the University of Notre Dame. With expertise spanning fuel cells, photoelectrochemistry, and electrosynthesis studies, Brian currently serves as a full professor in Physics at DTU. Our framework includes two ML models that predict the HYdrogen Storage capaciTy as function of temperature (HYST) and the enTHalpy of hydride fORmation (THOR) of multi-component metal alloys. Very much delighted to share that our new research work on Mg-CO2 batteries titled "Understanding Catalytic Mechanisms and Cathode Interface Kinetics in Nonaqueous Mg-CO2 Batteries" from aPrisM lab published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. Md Mahbubul Islam Wayne State University College of Engineering Utilizing first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, our research delves into the intricate electrocatalytic processes within Mg-CO2 batteries, employing the archetypical cathode catalyst, RuO2. Finally, I decided to share my journey in the scientific community as I am delighted to share my first author paper, with the title; “Computational study on nickel doped encapsulated Mg, K, Ca on pristine C24 nanocage for gas sensing applications” In this study, our investigation centers on exploring the adsorption and sensing characteristics of nickel-doped encapsulated Mg, K, and Ca on a pristine C24 nanocage concerning CO2, NO2, and SO2 gases. Our assessment encompasses a comprehensive analysis, including structural examination, adsorption energies, FMO, DOS, charge transfer, QTAIM, NCI, dipole moment, and recovery time to assess reusability. These findings are then compared with existing studies for a comprehensive understanding. This accomplishment is a reflection of diligence and perseverance in creating and advancing the innovative scientific study of global climate impact through gas sensors. Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is a challenging anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its low intrinsic electrical conductivity. This leads to sluggish electrode kinetics and low initial Coulombic efficiency (CE). In this journal article, Deakin University Hub researchers have utilised a magnetic field within battery cells to control the magnetoresistance of the SiO2 electrode, enhancing overall performance and improving the initial CE. This research development may be crucial for developing future high-performance battery systems. I’m so proud to share that our group’s recent research progress in photoelectrochemical water splitting has been published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and has been selected as journal cover. As a key chemical industry feedstock that consumes 1% of global electricity for production, chlorine has far higher economical value than oxygen, the by-product of conventional water splitting. Thin film photoanodes are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition, with crystalline bismuth vanadate light absorber and cobalt oxide catalyst. Chlorine generation is optimized with certain thickness cobalt oxide, which is chemically robust and effectively protects the underlying bismuth vanadate against corrosion. This research demonstrates that solar water splitting in brine produces chlorine simultaneously with hydrogen, by using a bismuth vanadate thin film photoanode capped with few-nm-thick cobalt oxide, also provides insights into using solar water splitting for by-products that carry significant economic value while avoiding the energetically expensive oxygen evolution reactions. This research was fully carried out at and supported by Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), which is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility, at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Our group's latest research on photoelectrochemical water splitting has been published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces and featured as cover article. This work explores a novel approach to chlorine generation, a feedstock with significantly higher economic value than the conventional by-product, oxygen. We used thin film photoanodes created through pulsed laser deposition, featuring a crystalline bismuth vanadate light absorber and a cobalt oxide catalyst. By optimizing the thickness of the cobalt oxide, we achieved efficient chlorine generation while ensuring the chemical robustness that protects the underlying bismuth vanadate from corrosion. This research not only showcases the simultaneous production of chlorine and hydrogen through solar water splitting in brine but also offers valuable insights into harnessing by-products with substantial economic value.
