June is refugee awareness month, and in preparation, we are calling on employers and immigrant-serving organizations to help us create a #WelcomingEconomy for refugees. If you have a refugee success story and/or new programs or services created to help employers hire refugees, please help by completing the form below by Tuesday, May 23, 2024. https://lnkd.in/gdsjVKXV Refugees are economic contributors to Canada. Did you know that 51% of refugees admitted to Canada between 2000 and 2008 had post-secondary education, filling critical skill gaps in various industries? Refugees who arrived in Canada between 1980 and 2009 contributed $20.6 billion more to government revenue than they received in government services, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada / Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada. By highlighting their successes, we break down barriers and build a more welcoming economy for everyone.

❗ 20 June - World Refugee Day Today, it is about standing in #solidarity with #refugees and sending a message of welcome and hope. But how do we demonstrate our solidarity? In practical terms, 📌 By educating ourselves about the refugee crisis, the causes of displacement, and the challenges that the refugees face; 📌 By advocating for refugees’ rights and supporting policies that protect refugees; 📌 By offering time, goods and skills to reputable organizations that work with refugees; 📌 By offering services or products to refugees at a discounted rate or for free; 📌 By becoming a mentor to a refugee, helping them navigate their new environment, find employment, or pursue education. 📌 By promoting cultural exchange; 📌 By being a friend. By taking any action, we can make a meaningful impact and show true solidarity with refugees. #WorldRefugeeDay, #WithRefugees

Refugee Week 2024 has kicked off this week. It is Australia’s peak annual activity to promote awareness of refugees, the issues they face and the contributions refugees are making to the Australian society. This year's theme "Finding Freedom: Family" comes as at a time when forced displacement has soared drastically over the last few years around the world. The UNHCR states over 120 million people have been forcibly displaced, out of which 43 million are refugees. Australia as one of the world's active refugee host nations has housed thousands of refugees over the last few years that come from countries around the world and now call Australia home. It is important that we reflect on the challenges refugees face in Australia and around the world while cherishing the important contributions they make to the stable growth of the Australian communities and economy. Calling are New Yorkers with a heart for refugees! The amazing people at Hearts & Homes for Refugees are helping New Yorkers to onboard with an exciting new State Department-led program known as the Welcome Corps. Welcome Corps allows U.S. citizens to support refugees who have been approved for resettlement through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). The U.S. currently faces a massive backlog of refugees, particularly from Afghanistan. The need is also urgent. A potential change of administration in 2025 will likely affect the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program; in Fiscal Year 2018, U.S. refugee admissions reached a historic low since the resettlement program first launched in 1980. It's time to act, now. Here’s how New Yorkers can change a life: 1. Email [email protected] with the subject, “Welcome Corps” to start a conversation with one of our staff about how you can get involved with the welcoming movement. 2. Start organizing a group of five friends, or members of your house of worship, civic group, book club… anyone who lives within a 30-minute radius to join a private sponsor group (PSG)! 3. List your PSG's preferences as part of the Welcome Corps application. Do you want to resettle a single, two people, or a family (and what size)? Is there a specific population you’d like to sponsor and resettle? Do you want to help those who have been waiting the longest? Or do you want to resettle Afghan allies, perhaps facing deportation in Pakistan? 4. Fundraise! But don’t worry! Although Welcome Corps requires each group to raise $2,425 per refugee resettled, several funds can cover more than half of that requirement, and HHR can provide guidance on how to fundraise the remainder. 5. Work with Hearts & Homes for Refugees to fill out your online application. Within a few months, HHR will support you as your team provides core sponsorship services for 90 days. https://lnkd.in/g9d9Asqv
