The entertainment industry has undergone several changes over the past few decades. Theatre, television and film have all played significant roles in shaping the current landscape of entertainment.
Theatre has been around for centuries with plays and musicals being performed in front of live audiences.
Television became popular in the mid-1900s, providing people with a way to watch their favourite shows from the comfort of their own homes.
Film has also been a staple in entertainment, with movies being shown in theatres for people to enjoy.
While these mediums have all contributed greatly to the entertainment industry, the future is shaping up to be even more innovative. With the advent of new technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality, viewers are able to experience entertainment like never before. Additionally, the rise of streaming services has impacted the film and television industries, allowing people to watch their favorite shows and movies on demand.
The old viewing figure wars were mainly down to the big four on mainstream TV- the battle of the soaps, the long running serial dramas and then big blockbuster films. As an actor working on a soap, these were incredibly important in their time. It was like checking the winning lottery numbers, the day after the show had aired.
I suppose I’m still confused as to how we know what is ACTUALLY popular and what is hype. Are we moulded and steered to think something is a hit because main stream TV chat shows say they are so we naturally believe? Do we, as consumers have to check the figures to be assured we are not being led? I do wonder…. When Trump started the whole ‘fake news’ campaign, the cynical me stepped into that spotlight. I started to doubt what was being fed to me at all. Did Trump wake us up, or was it an absolutely brilliant theatrical stint that is the what we know to be ‘The Greatest Show’!
As the future of entertainment continues to evolve, it's exciting to see what new practices will emerge. Whether it's through the use of cutting-edge technology or new storytelling techniques, the entertainment industry is sure to continue captivating audiences for years to come.
