I Bet You Didn’t Know: The Irish Since March is Irish History Month I bet there a few things you didn’t know about our heritage. - I bet you didn’t know Scotland was originally known as Pictland. It was named for the Irish Pict tribe imagrants. - I bet you didn’t know in ancient Ireland one could safely pass through a battlefield by holding up a white flower. Ancient Ireland white symbolized peace. Thats why today a white flag represents peace. - Ulster Region is the UK section in Ireland. I bet you didn’t know 3 of 9 Ulster counties are inside the Irish Republic. They’re Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan counties. - I bet you didn’t know people in the six British counties in Northern Ireland can decide their citizenship. Choices are UK, Ireland or both. - Bet you didn’t know Gaelic is Ireland’s native language. Recent years there’s been a push to bring it back. Some schools and TV stations are using this language. - I bet you didn’t know the Tricolor flag represents peace among the two nations on the Irish Island. Green (Irish Republic), White (peace) and Orange (Northern Ireland). - Bet you didn’t know in 1155 Pope Adrain IV approved Ireland’s annaxation by England. - I bet you didn’t know eight men that signed the USA Declaration of Independence were Irish. #EJAFellowUpdate: As my internship with Pangea Legal Services wraps up, I am incredibly grateful for the experiences I've had this summer. I've worked on multiple asylum cases, an SIJS guardianship application, an immigration-safe plea advisory letter, and a motion to reopen. I’ve completed forms, drafted declarations, written motions, compiled country conditions, and spent hours researching Fifth and Eleventh Circuit case law.  By the end of next week, I'll have observed eight different merits hearings. The highlight of my time at Pangea was the time I spent working directly with clients, and a particularly gratifying moment was being told, “you’ll be an excellent attorney one day.” The attorneys I've learned from this summer have taught me the meaning of zealous advocacy. They have shown me the power of values, creativity, and centering client goals in a cruel and arbitrary immigration system. They never take an outcome for granted and always reach for the best possible option. They are the ones to ask for safeguards, object to continuances that prolong their client’s detention, and submit a novel, long-shot motion in response to a change in law. Witnessing their strategies and success has shaped how I will practice in the future. There are two big takeaways that stand out to me right now. First, immigration law is hard. It’s hard to master and often, even harder to stomach. But second, and perhaps more importantly, there are kind, brilliant, and committed attorneys out there who relentlessly advocate for a better immigration system. They support one another and collaborate. They share knowledge and resources. A win for one client is also a step towards a broader idea of justice. This summer internship has reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career as an immigration attorney. Where I was once daunted by removal defense, I now feel equipped and inspired. I still get nervous at the thought of appearing in court, but now I’ve seen the myriad of ways it can be done. I’m excited to carry these lessons forward. Congratulations Cllr. Lilian Seenoi Barr of the Maasai tribe, Director of North West Migrants Forum and now the first black mayor in Northern Ireland! Mayor Seenoi-Barr comes from a family of Maasai leaders and works on human rights issues in Kenya and Northern Ireland. The most common topic in our “Difficult Conversations” workshop is the role of women as leaders in pastoralist cultures. Women have important, revered roles in these societies, but traditionally do not lead at the community-level. Our participants typically place great value on gender inclusion in leadership, so the pastoralist approach can seem in conflict. Such real or apparent conflicts are nuanced, and it takes time to unpack and understand one another. One of the goals of our Journeys is to provide the time and space required for deeper understanding and learning, which otherwise can be hard for leaders to find. These conversions can be uncomfortable, much like a 6-day trek through the bush, but as our Samburu colleagues say: “suffering will take you far, but comfort will kill you.” We might not go that far, but certainly our fundamental belief is that there is value in physical, social, and intellectual discomfort, which we moderate through a blend of cultural and wilderness immersion. We don’t avoid uncomfortable conversations. Rather, we seek them out in the name of education, self-awareness, and refining the important art of nuanced, respectful disagreement— a skill we see many leaders lacking. We also hope that, over time, such immersive experiences can contribute to positive change on both sides of the exchange, as we conserve the wisest and most beautiful elements of our respective cultures, while finding inspiration from the outside to evolve in other areas. We don’t know Mayor Seenoi-Barr, but would love to hear what she thinks—to what extent her story speaks to this power of cross-cultural experience. In ancient Rome, lawyers were known as jurisconsults and advocates, and they played a crucial role in the development of Roman law. - *Middle Ages*: During the Middle Ages, the legal profession declined in Western Europe, but it continued to evolve in the Byzantine Empire. The profession became more regulated and stratified, with advocates and notaries playing important roles. - *United States*: In the American colonies, lawyers were essential for the growth of trade and commerce. They became powerful local and colony-wide leaders, and by the 21st century, over one million practitioners in the United States held law degrees. - *India*: In India, the legal profession has a long history, with experts in law known as Vohara advising the king on achieving justice.
