How has the violent colonial history and legacy of mental health defined our experience of mental health today? In the midst of the Mau Mau independence revolution in Kenya, British Psychiatrist J.C. Carother concludes that the natives’ culture, with its “brutal oaths and obscene rituals,” makes them susceptible to anti-colonial resistance. He finds the natives to rely on “magical” modes of thinking, to be driven by “an irrational force of evil,” and “dominated by bestial impulses.” These must be signs and symptoms of a mental illness. He diagnoses the entire community with “mass psychosis,” labeling their desire for freedom as a mental illness. 📜 The story of legacy 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dJFbRssp

But growth isn’t comfortable. It pushes us to build from scratch, to change and adapt, and to be quick to pivot when things aren’t working. To do this, we realized that we needed to build an organization with two strong arms. 🚀 The road to 100k Read more: https://lnkd.in/dQQJxet9

We celebrated Shamiri Institute turning five. 🎉🎈 It was an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come. It has been quite the journey growing from our first intervention with 2,000 students to reaching 100,000 students this year! We curated an art exhibit with key photos and artefacts from each year and a panel discussion with team members reflecting on them. 🚀 Thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far, we look forward to reaching 1 million youth by 2027. #Shamiri #ShamiriAt5

“I was brought up in a society where I was expected to ‘man up’. Everything around me, including the content that I consumed, was telling me that I had to be tough." Ben and Dahlia share the experiences of Shamiri Fellows as they work with male adolescents to address mental health challenges. 🔗 Read our latest blog post to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gm9GJCnF

We are super excited to be part of Mulago's portfolio. Mulago is all about taking ideas to scale, and we are excited to continue working together towards scaling our mission of enabling thriving youth.
🗣 Shamiri Institute is a new addition to the Mulago portfolio 🗣 In Sub-Saharan Africa, 50% of youth face mental health challenges, and in Kenya alone, 5 million young people suffer from mental health disorders. Many adolescents have little-to-no resources to turn to. Shamiri Institute — led by Tom Osborn — has developed an effective, low-cost solution to this problem by tapping into the power of adolescent peers. Their school-based, group intervention is delivered by recent high school graduates and helps high schoolers build resilience to tackle the everyday stressors of poverty and improve their mental health. The beauty is Shamiri Institute’s approach seamlessly integrates into high school settings. They recruit and train recent graduates to deliver an evidence-based curriculum focused on growth mindset, gratitude, and value affirmation to groups of adolescents. Between sessions, students deepen their understanding through thoughtfully designed take-home exercises. Clinical supervisors provide oversight to ensure that more severe cases receive the necessary attention. We’re excited to support Shamiri Institute’s mission to provide effective mental health solutions and improve the lives of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa. Welcome to the Mulago portfolio.
